Quang Uyen Firecracker Festival

Time

The festival takes place from the 30th day of the First Lunar Month to the 2nd day of the Second Lunar Month.

Location

Bo Coc Chu water source, Pho Cu residential quarter, Quang Uyen town (Quang Hoa).

History and Relics

The Quang Uyen Firecracker Festival is the largest annual festival of the people of Quang Uyen district, closely associated with historical and spiritual elements related to Bach Linh shrine.

Bach Linh shrine is located at the end of Quang Uyen town, at the foot of Coc Bo mountain, about 100 meters from the town center. It is a folk belief monument with a history of more than one hundred years, although the exact time of its original construction is no longer clearly remembered. The shrine is dedicated to Bach Linh, or one hundred sacred beings, among which the Dragon holds the supreme position and stands at the head of the Four Sacred Creatures: Long, Ly, Quy, and Phuong.

According to surviving records, in the 6th year of the Khai Dinh era (1912), the tri chau of Quang Uyen, Ha Luong Tin, a native of Thai Binh, invited craftsmen from the lowland areas to renovate and rebuild the shrine in brick. The structure reflects Nguyen-dynasty architectural style, featuring a system of wooden columns, a roof covered with curved tiles, and a layout similar to that of a lowland pagoda, including a tam quan gate, courtyard, front hall, and rear sanctuary. About five meters south of the shrine, there still remains a stone slab engraved with a poem in Quoc ngu recording this renovation, clearly stating the name of the person in charge, official Ha Luong Tin, thereby demonstrating the historical and documentary value of the site.

Due to the impacts of time and war, today Bach Linh shrine retains only the tam quan gate, the courtyard, and the front hall. The tam quan also serves as the main worship space, with an area of about 4 square meters. Inside, there is an image of a dragon worshipping the sun, and the central altar is dedicated to the Dragon deity; in front of the entrance are painted figures of civil and military mandarins standing guard. The outer gate of the shrine is carved with floral motifs and dragon-and-phoenix patterns in the Nguyen architectural style, creating a solemn and ancient appearance.

Not only an architectural and religious monument, Bach Linh shrine also holds an important place in the spiritual life of the local community. Every year, on the 2nd day of the Second Lunar Month, Quang Uyen district organizes the Firecracker Festival associated with the shrine. The festival opens with the ritual of “opening the dragon’s eyes” and a palanquin procession from the Coc Bo water source, considered the sacred headwater. Here, the ritual master removes the paper covering the dragon’s eyes; three drum rolls sound and then intensify, symbolizing the awakening of the Dragon deity as it stretches and soars to the sky. The dragon dance team performs three rounds around the water source before the procession continues its journey.

After the ritual at Bach Linh shrine, the procession passes the temple of Nong Tri Cao, the temple of Tran Hung Dao, and the streets of the town. Residents along the route place incense and rice in front of their houses to welcome the dragon’s visit, believing that this will bring wealth and good fortune into their families.

Through many historical changes, Bach Linh shrine has continued to serve as an important cultural and spiritual space for the people of Quang Uyen. The site is not only associated with historical events and traditional festivals, but also acts as a spiritual anchor, helping to strengthen faith and community cohesion in everyday life.

Quang Uyen Firecracker Festival

The festival is organized with two main components: the ritual section and the festive section, harmoniously interweaving religious belief with community cultural activities.

The ritual section begins with the khai quang ceremony, also known as “opening the dragon’s eyes,” followed by the deity worship ceremony and the deity procession. The khai quang ritual is regarded as the most distinctive feature. The dragon is brought to the sacred water source beneath an ancient tree (locally called Bo Coc Chu) with its eyes covered, without dancing and without drumbeats. At this site, a respected village elder serves as the ritual master, together with a dragon team of fifteen people, to perform the ceremony. After offering incense and praying to Heaven and Earth for favorable weather, abundant harvests, and prosperous lives, the ritual master uses the blood of a rooster to anoint the dragon’s eyes and removes the covering paper. Three rounds of drumbeats resound; the dragon gradually comes to life, circles the water source three times, then proceeds to Bach Linh shrine to perform rites before officially joining the procession.

The offerings include two roasted pigs, one tray of sticky rice, one tray of red-dyed eggs, and one tray of fruit. The procession is conducted solemnly with four palanquins: a palanquin carrying the portrait of President Ho Chi Minh, a palanquin for the deity, a firecracker palanquin, and a roasted pig palanquin, which serves as the reward for the winning team in the firecracker-head contest. Following these is the dragon procession. After offering incense at the shrine, the procession proceeds to the Temple of Nong Tri Cao, the Temple of Tran Hung Dao, and then travels throughout the streets, visiting individual households. Wherever the dragon goes, it is warmly welcomed by residents, expressing reverence and belief in good fortune and blessings.

The festive section takes place in a lively atmosphere with many folk games and cultural performances such as dragon dance, lion dance, tug of war, stick pushing, human chess, con throwing, and luon singing. Among these, the firecracker-head contest is the most distinctive and eagerly anticipated activity. The firecracker head is made from an iron ring decorated with multicolored tassels. In the past, it was placed on a high platform and dropped after firecrackers were ignited; teams competed to seize it, and the team that brought the firecracker head to the Organizing Committee was declared the winner. In recent years, due to regulations banning firecrackers, the Organizing Committee has replaced this with throwing the iron ring from a high platform for teams to compete over. According to folk belief, the person or team that obtains the firecracker blessing ring will enjoy great luck and prosperous business, while also bringing honor to the locality. The winning commune receives the roasted pig on the palanquin as a prize and keeps the palanquin to burn incense and pray for blessings throughout the year; at the next festival season, new offerings are prepared for the subsequent procession.

Over time, the Quang Uyen Firecracker Festival has become deeply embedded in the spiritual life of many generations, forming an indispensable cultural feature each spring. Like many other festivals in Cao Bang, it embodies strong humanistic values, guiding people toward goodness, praying for blessings, prosperity, and good harvests, while honoring national heroes and preserving traditional customs. The melodies of Then, Sli, Luon, Phong Slu, Da Hai, and Ha Leu, together with distinctive folk games, not only enrich community cultural life but also create significant potential for the development of cultural tourism in the land of Cao Bang.

Then、Sli、Lượn、Phong Slư、Dá Hai、Hà Lều
