Năm 1592, Trịnh Tùng đánh bại nhà Mạc, rước vua Lê trở lại Thăng Long.

Phung Khac Khoan (1528–1613)

Family Background

Phung Khac Khoan was born in 1528 in Bung village, Phung Xa commune, Thach That district, Son Tay region (now part of Hanoi). According to oral tradition, he was a half-brother of Nguyen Binh Khiem, sharing the same mother but having different fathers.

In his childhood, Phung Khac Khoan was personally educated by his father and later studied under Nguyen Binh Khiem. He became renowned for his profound literary learning and his mastery of numerology and prognostication. However, he did not initially participate in the civil service examinations and did not serve the Mac court, demonstrating a deliberate attitude of self-restraint and a desire to keep his distance from the turbulent politics of the time.

Political Career

During the reign of King Le Trung Tong (1548–1556), when the restored Le dynasty was still struggling against the Mac dynasty, Phung Khac Khoan followed Le Ba Ly in the movement to support the Le and overthrow the Mac, thereby officially entering the political and military path.

In the year Dinh Ty (1557), at the age of twenty-nine, he sat for the provincial examination held at Yen Dinh (Thanh Hoa) and placed first, demonstrating outstanding scholarly ability. Trinh Kiem, then holding the authority of Thai su, recognized his broad learning and strategic talent and appointed him as Ky luc at the royal headquarters, in charge of registers concerning troops and civilians of the four guards, while also involving him in confidential deliberations of the court.

From 1558 to 1571, under King Le Anh Tong, Phung Khac Khoan was repeatedly dispatched to various localities to persuade displaced populations to return to their former homes, reclaim farmland, and stabilize livelihoods after prolonged warfare. Upon returning to court, he was successively promoted to Cap su trung of the Ministry of War, then transferred to Cap su trung of the Ministry of Rites. At times, because his words and views displeased the king, he was demoted and sent to Thanh Nam (Nghe An); however, not long afterward he was recalled and once again entrusted with important duties.

By the year Canh Thin (1580), under King Le The Tong, the court held the metropolitan examination at Van Lai (Thanh Hoa). Phung Khac Khoan requested permission to sit for the exam and passed with the rank of Hoang giap, after which he was appointed Do cap su.

In 1582, he asked to temporarily retire to his private residence in Van Lai, and the king consented. Yet only a year later (1583), the court summoned him again to serve as Hong lo tu khanh. In 1585, he was transferred to the post of Right Vice Minister of Works and then appointed Thua chinh su of Thanh Hoa, becoming the chief civil administrator of the region. According to his own account in Ngon chi thi tap (1586), at this time he was already a meritorious official especially favored by the court, entrusted with major responsibilities in administering the entire Thanh Hoa region.

In 1592, the restored Le dynasty defeated the Mac and escorted the king back to Thang Long. Subsequently, in 1593, Phung Khac Khoan was granted the title Kiet tiet tuyen luc cong than; by 1595, he was promoted to Left Vice Minister of Works, playing an important role in national reconstruction and repair after the war.

In the year Dinh Dau (1597), at the age of sixty-nine, while holding the post of Left Vice Minister of Works, he was entrusted by the court to serve as Chief Envoy to the Ming court in China. The mission was successful, preserving the dignity and interests of Dai Viet. Upon his return, he was promoted to Left Vice Minister of Personnel and granted the noble title Mai Linh Hau.

In 1599, when King Le Kinh Tong ascended the throne, Phung Khac Khoan was promoted to Minister of Works; in 1602, he was transferred to Minister of Revenue and ennobled as Mai Quan Cong, reaching the peak of his official career.

Not long afterward, he requested retirement to his native place. Although he withdrew from court politics, Phung Khac Khoan remained actively concerned with the people’s welfare. Most notably, he organized the digging of irrigation canals to divert water from the Thay mountain area, bringing water to irrigate the fields of Phung Xa and Hoang Xa villages, thereby helping local farmers secure long-term agricultural stability.

Phung Khac Khoan died in the year Quy Suu (1613) at the age of eighty-five. The court posthumously conferred upon him the title Thai pho. Later generations revered him as a model grand minister, distinguished both by his ability in governance and by his deep concern for the people and for moral integrity.

Literary Legacy

Alongside his official and diplomatic career, Phung Khac Khoan left a profound mark on Vietnamese literary history with a substantial body of writings in both Nom and Han scripts. However, due to prolonged historical upheavals, many of his works are now known only through bibliographic records or oral transmission, with complete texts no longer preserved.

Works in Nom Script

Phung Khac Khoan’s writings in Nom clearly reflect his outlook on life, personal aspirations, and the inner world of a great intellectual living in an age of turmoil.

  • Ngu phu nhap Dao Nguyen: Considered a lyrical piece imbued with a reclusive spirit, using the image of a fisherman entering the land of Dao Nguyen to express a yearning to escape fame and gain amid a chaotic reality. It was composed during the period when he was exiled to Thanh Nam (Nghe An) for displeasing the king. Unfortunately, the work has been lost, with only its title preserved in records.
  • Lam tuyen van: Consisting of 185 lines of luc bat verse, depicting a tranquil life in harmony with nature. Some scholars suggest it may be a variant of Ngu phu nhap Dao Nguyen, though no conclusive evidence has yet been established.
  • Chu Dich quoc am ca: A vernacular interpretation of the Book of Changes rendered into Nom script, intended to popularize Yi learning among Vietnamese readers. The original text compiled by Phung Khac Khoan has not survived; the work circulating today under the same title is actually by Dang Thai Bang (17th century).

In addition to these, he also composed several prefaces and stele inscriptions. Folk tradition and old bibliographies once attributed works such as Phung Thuong thu sam, Binh gia yeu chi, and Tu thien gia truyen chu to him, but due to the lack of reliable evidence, modern scholarship treats these attributions with caution and does not regard them as authentic.

Works in Han Script

Compared to his Nom writings, Phung Khac Khoan’s Han-script works have been preserved in greater quantity, clearly demonstrating his profound learning, Confucian thought, and moral character.

  • Ngon chi thi tap: This is his most important work. The poetry collection was composed continuously from when he was sixteen until around the age of eighty-six. According to the author, every ten years he compiled his poems into one volume, potentially totaling up to seven volumes. Today, however, only up to Volume V survives, corresponding to the period when he was about sixty years old, containing approximately 260 poems.
The content is remarkably rich, encompassing daily life, personal emotions, ideals of conduct, loyalty to the ruler and love of the country, as well as profound reflections on contemporary affairs. The collection serves both as a record of his life and as a lyrical, introspective work. A preface written by the author himself in 1586 stands at the beginning of the collection, providing later readers with insight into the circumstances and motivations behind its composition.
  • Huan dong thi tap: Originally consisting of 172 poems describing weather, climate, plants, insects, birds, and animals, intended to educate children about the natural world and cultivate moral character. Today, only about thirty poems remain, yet they still clearly reflect the author’s progressive educational thought.
  • Da thuc tap (“Collection of Broad Knowledge”): Inspired by his reading of the Book of Songs, in which many names of plants, birds, insects, and fish appear, he composed this collection to broaden children’s knowledge. About one hundred poems survive. Like Huan dong thi tap, this work emphasizes instruction and the transmission of knowledge, with literary artistry being of secondary concern.
  • Mai Linh su hoa thi tap: A poetry collection composed during his diplomatic mission to China, recording landscapes along the journey, diplomatic encounters, literary exchanges, and vividly expressing the homesickness and longing for his homeland felt by an envoy traveling far from home on state duty.

Worship

The ancestral hall and tomb of Phung Khac Khoan are located in Bung hamlet, Phung Xa commune, Thach That district. This site has long been recognized as a cultural monument dedicated to a distinguished historical figure. During the Nguyen dynasty, it was repaired and renovated; according to the Han inscription on the main beam, the ancestral hall underwent major restoration and completion in the first year of Duy Tan (1907). This house was the birthplace and childhood home of Phung Khac Khoan. During his lifetime, he renovated it into a school and named it Hoang dao thu duong.

The building follows the “nhi”-shaped architectural layout, consisting of a ceremonial hall and a rear sanctuary. The main gate faces east, with surrounding walls enclosing the compound. Across a spacious courtyard stands the ceremonial hall, also known as Hoang dao thu duong, flanked at both gable ends by tall stone pillars about four meters high, topped with sculpted mythical beasts. Phung Khac Khoan founded the study hall in the year Tan Hoi (1551), on what had originally been the residence of a Hanlin scholar surnamed Nguyen from the Tran period.

At present, the ceremonial hall is a transverse structure covering about fifty square meters, divided into three compartments with open gable ends. From the courtyard one can see the rear sanctuary. On the inner left wall are three stone steles mounted on brick bases. Behind lies the rear sanctuary, covering about eighty square meters, with closed gables and a front façade of wooden panel doors.

The ancestral hall preserves many valuable artifacts dating from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. In addition to eleven royal edicts issued from the Canh Hung period (1740–1786) through the Thieu Tri period (1841–1847), particularly noteworthy are four books written in Han script.

Danh nhan Phung Khac Khoan (1528–1613)

Il fut alors nomme Do cap su.

L’oeuvre aurait ete composee durant son exil a Thanh Nam (Nghe An).

(Phung Khac Khoan,1528—1613)
