Do sông Hồng ngăn cách, quân Nam triều chưa vượt sông được.

Bui Van Khue (1546–1600)

Family Background

Bui Van Khue was originally from Chi Phong hamlet, part of the ancient village of Truong Yen, now located in Tay Hoa Lu Ward, Ninh Binh Province. According to the sacred records of Vuc Vong Temple, both Bui Van Khue and his father were natives of Truong Yen and rendered significant services in the repair and preservation of the ancient capital of Hoa Lu.

However, it is noteworthy that on the opposite bank of the Hoang Long River, in Dai Hoang Commune, there also exists another village named Chi Phong. In that village stands a family ancestral hall dedicated to Bui Van Khue, where his wife Nguyen Thi Nien and their sons Bui Thi Trung and Bui Khac Kiem are also worshipped. This suggests the possibility of migration, residential branching, or differing traditions of worship between the two areas sharing the same name of Chi Phong.

Regarding his career, Bui Van Khue pursued a military path and became a general serving the Mac dynasty, at one time commanding naval forces. He was granted the title of Son Quan Cong by the Mac court and assigned to guard the Nam Dao Son region. In terms of family relations, Bui Van Khue was the son-in-law of the renowned general Nguyen Quyen, having married Nguyen Thi Nien, Nguyen Quyen’s second daughter. Notably, Nguyen Thi Nien’s elder sister was the empress of King Mac Mau Hop, which meant that Bui Van Khue was directly connected by marriage to the Mac royal family.

Service under the Mac Dynasty

At the beginning of 1592, the Southern Court general Trinh Tung led a large army northward and launched a major offensive against Thang Long. In response, King Mac Mau Hop mobilized substantial forces to confront the attack, but suffered a severe defeat just before the Lunar New Year. Unable to hold the capital, he abandoned Thang Long and retreated across the Hong River to seek refuge.

After this initial defeat, the Mac ruler and his officials attempted to quickly reorganize their forces to resist further attacks. On the sixth day of the New Year, Trinh Tung urged his troops to cross the To Lich River, advance to Nhan Muc Bridge, and establish his main headquarters at Xa Doi Mountain, arranging his formations in preparation for assault.

On the Mac side, Mac Mau Hop divided his forces to defend key directions:

  • Mac Ngoc Lien was ordered to command his own troops, holding the defensive line from Bao Khanh Gate westward to Nhat Chieu Ward.
  • Bui Van Khue, together with Tran Bach Nien, commanded four guard units, defending the area from Cau Dua Gate through Cau Muong to Cau Den Gate, sealing the city gates tightly and holding out within Dai La Citadel day and night.
  • Nguyen Quyen (Bui Van Khue’s father-in-law) commanded a force from Mac Xa eastward, serving as a mobile reserve to support other units.
  • Mac Mau Hop personally commanded the naval forces, deploying more than one hundred warships to control the Nhi Ha River as riverine reinforcements.

Nevertheless, in subsequent engagements, the Mac main forces were quickly shattered by the Southern Court army. The renowned general Nguyen Quyen was captured alive. Facing a completely unfavorable situation, Bui Van Khue, Tran Bach Nien, Mac Ngoc Lien, and even Mac Mau Hop himself abandoned their positions and fled to avoid annihilation.

Although Mac Mau Hop was forced to withdraw from Thang Long, Trinh Tung also realized that his own forces were not yet strong enough to fully control and occupy the entire North. He therefore proactively withdrew his troops back to Thanh Hoa, temporarily ending the campaign.

Defection to the Le Dynasty

Because the Hong River still separated the opposing forces, the Southern Court army had not yet crossed it. Meanwhile, Mac Mau Hop became lax in his defenses and indulged in wine and women. Bui Van Khue’s wife, Nguyen Thi Nien, frequently entered the palace to visit her elder sister, the Nguyen empress. Seeing Nguyen Thi Nien’s beauty, Mac Mau Hop secretly plotted to kill Bui Van Khue in order to seize his wife. Upon learning of this, Bui Van Khue withdrew his own troops back to Gia Vien and no longer followed the Mac king.

In the tenth month of 1592, he sent his son Bui Van Nguyen to Thanh Hoa to surrender to the Le dynasty. Trinh Tung immediately dispatched Hoang Dinh Ai with troops to provide assistance. Upon learning that Van Khue had defected to the Le, Mac Mau Hop retreated to hold the Thien Phai River.

On the 28th day of the tenth month of 1592, Trinh Tung advanced his army to Truong Yen. The Mac forces, led by Nghia Quoc Cong, defended the Thien Phai River, building ramparts and setting stakes to resist. Trinh Tung employed a coordinated attack: Bui Van Khue struck from upstream, firearms were fired downstream, while elephants and cavalry crossed the river to attack head-on. The Mac army collapsed, and Nghia Quoc Cong abandoned his boats and fled.

Not long afterward, Mac Mau Hop was completely defeated, captured, and executed. Trinh Tung escorted King Le The Tong back to Thang Long; however, members of the Mac clan still held many areas in the northern region.

At the beginning of 1593, Bui Van Khue, together with former Mac generals such as Nguyen That Ly, Tran Bach Nien, and Nguyen Nga, campaigned against Mac Kinh Chi, but suffered defeat: Nguyen That Ly was killed in battle, Nguyen Nga was wounded, and Van Khue and Bach Nien were forced to withdraw. Hai Duong and Kinh Bac again fell under Mac control. Only later did Trinh Tung, together with Hoang Dinh Ai and Nguyen Huu Lieu, manage to suppress Mac Kinh Chi, though Mac remnants still remained.

From 1596 to 1598, Bui Van Khue continuously participated in campaigns to suppress rebellions:

  • 1596: together with Nguyen The, he captured Pham Hang at Dam Khe Mountain and escorted him to the capital for execution.
  • 1597: he commanded naval forces to attack Hai Duong and killed Le Quan Cong of the Mac faction.
  • 1598: he followed Nguyen Hoang in suppressing Hai Duong and Thuy Duong, personally capturing and executing many rebel leaders.
  • Fifth month of 1598: he continued to suppress Mac remnants in Tan Minh and An Duong, stabilizing both districts.

Abandoning the Le, Returning to the Mac, and Death

At that time, Nguyen Hoang (uncle of Trinh Tung) was governing Thuan Hoa. He had come north to assist the Le dynasty in fighting the Mac, but feared that once the campaign ended, Trinh Tung would suspect him and prevent his return south. In the fifth month of 1600, Nguyen Hoang devised a plan to incite Bui Van Khue, along with Phan Ngan and Ngo Dinh Nga (both former Mac generals), to rebel, so that he could take the pretext of “suppressing the rebellion” and then find a way to escape back south.

According to this plan, Bui Van Khue, Phan Ngan, and Ngo Dinh Nga raised troops against the Le dynasty and turned back to support the Mac. Nguyen Hoang requested to lead troops to suppress them, but upon reaching the coast, he burned his camp, abandoned his army, and fled back to Thuan Hoa. Trinh Tung was forced to escort the Le king back to Tay Do to preserve the core base.

Bui Van Khue, together with Phan Ngan and Ngo Dinh Nga, assisted the Mac, pacifying and recruiting garrisons. However, not long afterward, Phan Ngan suspected that Bui Van Khue harbored his own ambitions and ordered men to shoot and kill him in the middle of the river.

Afterward, Nguyen Thi Nien secretly rallied her husband’s former troops to seek revenge. In the sixth month of 1600, when Phan Ngan led troops into battle at Hoang Giang, he was shot dead in the middle of the river by forces under Nguyen Thi Nien’s command. Phan Ngan’s younger brother later surrendered to the Le dynasty and was pardoned; Ngo Dinh Nga continued to follow the Mac and was captured and executed in the ninth month of the same year.

The Legend of Vuc Vong Temple

Local legend at Vuc Vong Temple, located within the complex of the ancient capital of Hoa Lu, beside the Hoang Long River in Chi Phong hamlet, Truong Yen, Hoa Lu District, Ninh Binh, also recounts the death of Nguyen Thi Nien after she avenged her husband.

According to this legend, Bui Van Khue and Phan Ngan were both subordinates of Nguyen Quyen and both harbored affection for Nguyen Thi Nien. Because of his talent in taming the whirlpool at Vuc Vong—having stones placed to redirect the current so that the whirlpool disappeared—Bui Van Khue won Nguyen Quyen’s favor and was given Nguyen Thi Nien in marriage.

Enraged at not being able to marry Nguyen Thi Nien, Phan Ngan falsely accused Nguyen Quyen, causing Nguyen Quyen to lose his position, which Phan Ngan then took over. He later sent men to assassinate Bui Van Khue in order to seize Nguyen Thi Nien.

To take revenge, Nguyen Thi Nien pretended to accept marriage to Phan Ngan and lured him onto a boat in the middle of the Hoang Long River, where she killed him, as recorded in the Kham Dinh Viet Su Thong Giam Cuong Muc. She ordered Phan Ngan’s head to be cut off and offered in sacrifice to her husband. Afterward, she leapt into the river and committed suicide.

Her body drifted into the Vong whirlpool. Out of sorrow and gratitude, local people built a temple to worship her beside the site, which came to be known as Vuc Vong Temple. In her native area, villagers also established Sac Communal House in Canh Hoach Village, Dan Hoa Commune, Hanoi City, to worship her.

Worship

Located within the historical complex of the ancient capital of Hoa Lu, Vuc Vong Temple is a sacred and mysterious spiritual site. This ancient temple worships Thai Bao My Quan Cong Bui Van Khue and his wife Nguyen Thi Nien. The temple is currently situated in Chi Phong hamlet, the ancient village of Truong Yen, Tay Hoa Lu Ward, Ninh Binh. Dedicated to Nguyen Thi Nien, the temple preserves seventeen royal edicts granted to My Quan Cong Bui Van Khue and two royal edicts granted to Nguyen Thi Nien.

Bui Van Khue (1546–1600)

Trinh Tung ramena ensuite le roi Le The Tong a Thang Long.

(Bui Van Khue,1546—1600)

  • 命莫玉练(Mac Ngoc Lien)统率本部军队,防守从宝庆门(Cua Bao Khanh)向西延至日招坊(Nhat Chieu)一线;
  • 裴文奎与陈百年(Tran Bach Nien)率领四卫军,镇守从椰桥门(Cua Cau Dua)经芒桥(Cau Muong)至簟桥门(Cua Cau Den)一带,紧闭城门,昼夜固守大罗城(Dai La);
  • 阮奎恩(裴文奎岳父)率一军自莫舍(Mac Xa)向东布防,作为机动兵力以策应诸军;

  • 1596年:与阮体(Nguyen The)在担溪山(Nui Dam Khe)擒获范行(Pham Hang),解送京师斩首;
  • 1597年:统率水军进攻海阳,斩杀莫党之礼郡公(Le Quan Cong);
  • 1598年:随阮黄(Nguyen Hoang)讨平海阳、水塘(Thuy Duong),亲手擒斩多名伪首;
