Vinh danh

Hoang Giap Nguyen Thai Bat (1504–1527)
Background
He was born on the 10th day of the first lunar month of the year Giap Ty (corresponding to January 26, 1504) in Binh Lang village, Ngoc Truc canton, Cam Giang district, Thuong Hong prefecture, Hai Duong province (now belonging to Cam Giang commune, Hai Phong city).
He grew up in a long-established Confucian scholar family with a strong tradition of learning. From a young age, he was already famous for his intelligence and exceptional talent.
According to tradition, when he was only three years old he could listen to others reading and imitate their pronunciation. At the age of seven, he studied with Nguyen Van Van – who had obtained the Hoang giap degree in the examination of the year At Suu (1505) and later served as Do Ngu su under the reign of King Le Uy Muc.
Official career
At the age of thirteen (according to the East Asian age-counting system, around the year 1516), Nguyen Thai Bat passed the Huong Cong examination, ranking third in the Huong examination in Hai Duong province that year. Afterward, he asked his parents for permission to travel and observe the life of the common people. When he reached Phan Xa village, Quang Liet canton, Phu Dung district, Khoai Chau prefecture, Son Nam province (now Phan Xa hamlet, Tong Phan commune, Phu Cu district, Hung Yen province), he found that the place had favorable geomantic features. He stayed there and asked the local elders to help him open a school to teach the people of Phan Xa. During this period, he still diligently studied the Confucian classics.
At the age of seventeen (1520), King Le Chieu Tong issued an edict summoning him to return to the capital with his household retainers to attend the metropolitan and palace examinations. In the Canh Thin examination of 1520, the metropolitan examination initially selected thirteen candidates, but later two were found to have violated examination regulations, leaving eleven candidates for the palace examination. In the policy essay examination set by the king concerning the use of talented people, Nguyen Thai Bat ranked first among the Hoang giap degree holders and was appointed Hieu ly at the Han Lam Academy.
Supporting the Le, refusing the Mac
During the turmoil of the year Nham Ngo (1522), when King Le Chieu Tong was pressured and threatened by Mac Dang Dung to the point that he had to flee to Thanh Hoa, Nguyen Thai Bat together with his teacher Nguyen Van Van (then serving as Do Ngu su) joined the entourage escorting the king to Tay Kinh (Thanh Hoa).
Later, Mac Dang Dung forced the king to return from Thanh Hoa on February 17, 1526, and then had the king killed in Dong Ha ward of the Thang Long capital in December 1526. Nguyen Thai Bat resigned from office and returned to his hometown.
After seizing the throne on June 15, 1527, Mac Dang Dung realized that gaining the throne was difficult, but winning the hearts of the people was even more difficult. Therefore he tried to recruit, appease, bribe, and even coerce many former officials of the Le dynasty to continue serving. Although Nguyen Thai Bat pretended to be blind to avoid participating in government affairs, the Mac court still sent people to search for him and both invited and pressured him to appear at court to be appointed Do Ngu su. Unable to refuse indefinitely, he was forced to come to the capital.
Because he claimed to be blind, he requested to sit close to Mac Dang Dung while discussing state affairs. When the distance could not be any closer, he shouted at Mac Dang Dung: “You are a disloyal rebel.” He then declared: “I would rather be a ghost of the Le household than serve as an official of the usurping Mac.” Not stopping there, he spat in Mac Dang Dung’s face and then struck his head against the palace steps, committing suicide.
He died at the age of only twenty-four (in 1527). At that time many officials chose death to protest the Mac dynasty for killing the king and usurping the throne, which ignited the movement to restore the Le and destroy the Mac.
Posthumous honors
Forty-five years after his death, King Le Anh Tong issued an imperial decree recognizing Nguyen Thai Bat as a village tutelary deity according to the sacred biography of Phan Xa village, Tong Phan commune, Phu Cu district, Hung Yen province. The official text was compiled by Nguyen Binh, an official of the Later Le dynasty, in the first lunar month of the first year of the Hong Phuc era (1572).
At present, the spirit tablet worshiped in the communal house of Phan Xa village, Tong Phan commune, Phu Cu district, Hung Yen province bears the inscription: “Le dynasty Bang nhan, Han lam thi thu Nguyen Cong Huy Thai Bat, successively enfeoffed as Trung Liet Dai Vuong, tutelary deity of this locality.” However, this title was an honorific attribution by later generations, since Nguyen Thai Bat did not obtain the Bang nhan rank but rather the Hoang giap degree, that is, a second-rank doctoral laureate, below the first-rank Tien si cap de (also called the Tam khoi, consisting of the three highest positions: Trang nguyen, Bang nhan, and Tham hoa).
Historical works of the Later Le restoration period later contained many writings praising his loyalty to the Le dynasty. In 1666, 139 years after his death, the restored Le court reviewed and rewarded loyal and righteous officials, and he was granted the title of Trung dang than, while the king ordered the people of Cam Giang to build a shrine in his honor.
The book Le trieu khieu vinh thi tap records:
“Nguyen Thai Bat of Binh Lang village, Cam Giang district, passed the Tien si examination in the reign of King Le Quang Thieu (1520) and served at the Han Lam Academy. When the Mac family seized the throne of King Le Chieu Tong, Thai Bat pretended to suffer from blindness and refused to submit to the Mac, but Mac Dang Dung still forced him to appear at court. He asked to sit facing him during the audience. Taking advantage of the moment, he spat in Dang Dung’s face and cursed him, and was immediately killed.”
Temple of Loyal Integrity and Blessing Deity
In November 1666, 139 years after Nguyen Thai Bat’s death, during the Later Le restoration when the Mac regime had been destroyed in Cao Bang, King Le Huyen Tong issued an imperial decree praising the merits of thirteen officials who had died for loyalty.
Nguyen Thai Bat was granted the construction of the Temple of Loyal Integrity and Blessing Deity in Binh Phien hamlet, Ngoc Lien, Cam Giang, Hai Duong. He was also granted the title Duc Bao Trung Hung Tiet Nghia Phuc Than with the posthumous name Cuong Truc. Later kings continued to issue imperial decrees honoring him at this temple.
Imperial decree of the first year of Chieu Thong (1787)
The decree granted to the Great King who passed the Canh Thin examination as a second-rank doctoral laureate (De nhi giap Tien si xuat than), served as Hieu ly at the Han Lam Academy, Nguyen Quy Cong, with the posthumous name Cuong Truc. The decree praises him as a person accomplished in both civil and military talents, capable of great governance, whose lifelong achievements and noble lineage were widely respected. Like heaven and earth enduring for countless years, he silently assisted the state and left blessings for future generations. Because of his spiritual assistance to the royal house and the restoration of rightful rule, he deserved further elevation in rank.
Thus he was additionally enfeoffed with a long series of honorific titles praising his virtue, loyalty, righteousness, wisdom, bravery, and service to the people and the state, concluding with the title Dai Vuong.
Issued on the 22nd day of the third month, first year of the Chieu Thong era (1787).
Historical assessment
The historical work Kham dinh Viet su thong giam cuong muc, although differing somewhat in the dates, also records his death: “At that time Han lam hieu ly Nguyen Thai Bat was forced by Dang Dung to appear at court. He pretended to be blind, was allowed to approach closely, and then spat in Dang Dung’s face and cursed loudly (…) and was killed by Dang Dung.”
King Tu Duc of the Nguyen dynasty later wrote a poem in the collection Ngu che Viet su tong vinh praising Nguyen Thai Bat as a man of integrity who preferred death to humiliation. The poem reads:
“Thu nhat son ha bat nhan kham
Da cam mong co doc tam quan
Nhat trieu thoa dien kham o nhi
Phi thi Lau gia kha tu can.”
Temporary translation:
“That day the mountains and rivers could hardly bear to witness it.
He was willing to feign blindness to preserve his loyal heart.
One moment of spitting in the tyrant’s face was enough to stain him.
This was not like the Lau family preserving themselves in safety.”

Hoang Giap Nguyen Thai Bat (1504-1527)
Origines familiales
Nhat trieu thoa dien kham o nhi
Phi thi Lau gia kha tu can »
Traduction approximative :

(1504–1527) Hoang Giap Nguyen Thai Bat(Nguyen Thai Bat)

宁愿假装盲目以守本心;
