Lê Thận thường xuyên đi sát bên Lê Lợi cùng Lê Văn An và Lê Văn Linh.

Background
Lê Thận, also known as Nguyễn Thận, was one of the notable figures among the group of meritorious officials who joined Lê Lợi in building the Lam Sơn uprising from its earliest days. He came from Mục Sơn settlement, an area within the Lam Sơn region, which was also Lê Lợi’s homeland and one of the important areas where the anti-Ming insurgent forces took shape in the early fifteenth century.
Unlike many later meritorious officials who came from prominent clans or had previously held offices in the former governmental apparatus, Lê Thận began life in relatively humble circumstances. According to the Đại Việt thông sử, he made his living as a fisherman and regularly cast his nets in the river. His occupation as an ordinary river-dweller gives the early image of Lê Thận in the historical record a very different character from that of the high-ranking official he would later become.
It was from this ordinary life that he formed a relationship with Lê Lợi, a man from the same region who had been close to him even before the Lam Sơn uprising began. Lê Thận “associated with the king from an early time”; Lê Lợi frequently visited his home. Their relationship was not merely that of men from the same locality, but gradually developed into a close friendship. Lê Thận was one of the earliest members of Lê Lợi’s intimate circle and shared the same aspirations.
The Đại Việt thông sử records a legend according to which, on one occasion while casting his net in the river, Lê Thận saw a light beneath the water resembling the glow of a torch. Not knowing what it was, he continued fishing. Later, when he pulled in his net, he caught an iron object more than one thước long, shaped like a knife. Unaware of its value, he brought it home and placed it in a dark corner.
One day, Lê Lợi came to visit Lê Thận while Lê Thận was away and only his wife was at home. Lê Lợi saw a light coming from the place where the iron object had been stored. Surprised, he asked about it, and Lê Thận’s wife told him how her husband had caught the piece of iron in the river. Lê Lợi examined it and took it with him.
According to the legend, although the iron had not yet been polished, it still shone, and seal-script characters could be seen upon it. Lê Lợi realized that it was no ordinary piece of iron but an object of special significance. Later, Lê Lợi found a sword hilt at the foot of a banyan tree. When the iron blade found earlier was fitted into the hilt, the two parts matched perfectly.
If the legendary elements are set aside, the clearer historical point is that the relationship between Lê Thận and Lê Lợi had already been established before the uprising. This close bond helps explain why, when Lê Lợi began gathering forces, Lê Thận was among those who followed him from a very early stage. From a fisherman, he gradually entered the political and military life of the country and ultimately became one of the founding meritorious officials of the Early Lê dynasty.
Historical Context
In 1407, the Ming dynasty completed its conquest of Đại Việt after defeating the Hồ dynasty, and the country entered a period of rule under Ming administration. Anti-Ming uprisings repeatedly broke out in many localities, but most were suppressed. Under such circumstances, the formation of a force that was organized, well-led, and capable of sustaining a prolonged struggle became a decisive issue.
Thanh Hóa in general, and the Lam Sơn–Mục Sơn area in particular, possessed favorable conditions for the formation of an anti-Ming force. The region had varied terrain, including plains and rivers as well as access to the mountainous areas to the west, while local social and kinship networks were relatively strong. Lê Lợi relied on networks of relatives, local notables, friends, and like-minded people to gradually prepare his forces. In this process, Lê Thận was one of those who held an important position in the Lam Sơn uprising.
Career
Participation in the Lam Sơn Uprising
The Lũng Nhai Oath was an important milestone in the preparation for the Lam Sơn uprising. There, Lê Lợi and his like-minded companions swore an oath to share danger and hardship and to unite in resisting the Ming. In the list of those who participated in the oath, Lê Thận’s name appeared in third position, after Lê Lợi and Lê Lai.
This position has a certain significance in identifying Lê Thận as a member of the group whom Lê Lợi trusted and selected before formally launching the war. If the Lũng Nhai Oath may be regarded as the establishment of an initial political-military alliance of the Lam Sơn forces, then Lê Thận’s presence near the top of the list indicates that he already held an important place within that group.
In 1418, Lê Lợi officially raised the banner of revolt at Lam Sơn. Owing to his prior experience and long-standing association with Lê Lợi, Lê Thận was appointed Deputy Commander of cavalry in the Thiết Đột army. The Thiết Đột force was an elite combat unit responsible for protection and for fighting in important situations. Lê Thận’s appointment to this force shows that his position was based not only on personal ties or affection with Lê Lợi, but also on his use as a military commander directly involved in warfare.
During the early years of the uprising, the Lam Sơn insurgents faced extremely difficult circumstances. Their initial forces were small and poorly equipped, while the Ming army possessed advantages in manpower and weaponry. The insurgents repeatedly faced food shortages, enemy pursuit, and the need to move through difficult terrain. In this situation, those who had followed Lê Lợi from the beginning played an important role in maintaining the force.
Lê Thận frequently remained close to Lê Lợi together with Lê Văn An and Lê Văn Linh. During the most difficult years of the uprising, he belonged to the group of men who consistently remained beside their leader.
A Meritorious Official under Three Reigns
After ten years of fighting, the Lam Sơn uprising achieved victory. In 1428, Lê Lợi ascended the imperial throne, adopted the reign title Thuận Thiên, and inaugurated the Early Lê dynasty.
In the second lunar month of the first year of Thuận Thiên (1428), the court ranked the meritorious officials. Lê Thận was ranked second among those who had served Lê Lợi since the time of Lũng Nhai. He was appointed Trung Lượng đại phu, placed in charge of the Left and Right Phủng Thần guards, and granted the title Đại Trí tự.
Being ranked second among those whose service dated back to Lũng Nhai represented significant recognition. It shows that the court evaluated merit not only on the basis of victories achieved during the final stages of the uprising, but also placed importance on those who had followed Lê Lợi from the very beginning. For Lê Thận, this was the court’s formal recognition of his role in the establishment of the Lam Sơn cause.
In 1429, the Lê court had plaques engraved to record the names of officials who had rendered great service to the new dynasty. Lê Thận was granted the title Á hầu. From his origins as a fisherman, he had now formally entered the aristocratic ranks of the Early Lê dynasty.
In the years that followed, Lê Thận’s career did not stop with his role as a founding military commander. Under the reign of Lê Thái Tông, he continued to be entrusted with important positions in both the army and government.
During the Thiệu Bình era (1434–1439), Lê Thận was appointed Nhập nội Thiếu úy and participated in military affairs concerning the guards of the Western Command. This office shows that he continued to play a military role and belonged to the group of high-ranking court officials.
In the sixth lunar month of the fourth year of Thiệu Bình (1437), he was transferred to serve as Tham tri Bắc đạo. This was a period when the court of Lê Thái Tông was experiencing major internal changes among its senior officials. After Lê Sát was punished, Lê Thận was appointed Tư mã, placed in charge of the military guards of the Northern Command, and allowed to participate in affairs of state.
In the eighth lunar month of 1437, King Lê Thái Tông ordered Lê Thận, together with Đỗ Đại, Lê Xí, and Lê Thụ, to oversee judicial proceedings.
Under the reign of Lê Nhân Tông, Lê Thận’s status continued to rise. In the first year of the Thái Hòa era (1443), he was promoted to Nhập nội kiểm hiệu Tư đồ Bình chương sự, a position belonging to the highest ranks of senior court officials.
In 1446, Lê Thận was ordered by the king, together with Nhập nội Đô đốc Nguyễn Xí, to lead an army against Champa. The fact that he continued to be entrusted with major military responsibilities at an advanced age demonstrates the lasting confidence placed in him.
By the sixth year of the Thái Hòa era (1448), when King Lê Nhân Tông returned to Lam Kinh, Lê Thận remained in the capital as lưu thủ, or official responsible for guarding the capital. Together with Lê Bí, he oversaw the defense of the capital. This was also one of the final major responsibilities of his life.
Looking at the period from 1416 to 1448 as a whole, Lê Thận’s career can be seen as one of continuous advancement. He rose from being a fisherman to a participant in the Lũng Nhai Oath; from a member of the insurgent force to a military officer of the Thiết Đột army; from military commander to founding meritorious official; and from founding official to high-ranking minister under the three reigns of Lê Thái Tổ, Lê Thái Tông, and Lê Nhân Tông.
Death and Worship
Lê Thận died in the seventh lunar month of the sixth year of the Thái Hòa era (1448). He passed away while still holding an important position in the capital.
After his death, the court posthumously granted him the office of Bình chương quân quốc trọng sự, conferred upon him the title Huyện Thượng hầu, bestowed the posthumous name Trung Tiết, and granted him the ceremonial honors of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices.
The posthumous name “Trung Tiết” is particularly noteworthy. Under the monarchical system, the granting of a posthumous name to senior officials after death was a means by which the court evaluated and recognized the character and achievements of the deceased. In Lê Thận’s case, this posthumous name corresponded with the image of a meritorious official who had followed Lê Lợi from the earliest days of the uprising and continued serving the court until the end of his life.
In the fifteenth year of the Hồng Đức era (1484), under the reign of Lê Thánh Tông, he was further posthumously granted the office of Thái phó and the title Hoằng Quận công. The fact that he continued to receive posthumous honors more than three decades after his death shows that the contributions of the Lam Sơn founding officials continued to be preserved within the official memory of the court of Lê Thánh Tông.
The fifteenth century under Lê Thánh Tông was, in particular, a period in which the court tended to systematize institutions, rituals, and dynastic history. The granting of further honors to members of the founding generation also contributed to reinforcing the political memory of the origins of the Early Lê dynasty.
Today, Ngọc Lan Temple, located within the Lam Kinh historical site, is dedicated to Princess Ngọc Lan together with seven founding meritorious officials: Nguyễn Xí, Nguyễn Nhữ Lãm (Lê Nhữ Lãm), Nguyễn Thận (Lê Thận), Lê Văn An, Lê Bổng, Lê Phần, and Lê Đạt, who played important roles in the establishment of the Early Lê dynasty.
Assessment
Lê Thận was one of the notable meritorious officials of the Lam Sơn uprising and also a figure whose life underwent a remarkable transformation from that of a fisherman in Mục Sơn to that of a high-ranking minister of the Early Lê dynasty. He was associated with Lê Lợi before the uprising, participated in the Lũng Nhai Oath, followed the insurgent army from its earliest stage, and directly assumed important military responsibilities.
After the uprising achieved victory, he continued to hold numerous important offices under the three reigns of Lê Thái Tổ, Lê Thái Tông, and Lê Nhân Tông. His career shows that Lê Thận not only contributed to the resistance against the Ming but also took part in the construction and consolidation of the Early Lê government.
The image of Lê Thận exists simultaneously within two layers of memory: history and legend. Official historical sources record his activities, titles, and achievements in considerable detail, while the legend of the Thuận Thiên sword associates him with the discovery of the sword blade in the river, creating a distinctive symbol within the cultural memory surrounding Lê Lợi and the Lam Sơn uprising. The sword story belongs to the realm of legend, but it also helps explain the enduring vitality of Lê Thận’s image in folk culture.
From an ordinary man to an Á hầu, then Huyện Thượng hầu, and eventually receiving the posthumous honors of Thái phó and Hoằng Quận công, Lê Thận’s life reflects the position occupied by the Lam Sơn meritorious officials in the formation of the Early Lê dynasty. He was among those who accompanied Lê Lợi from the earliest stage of his cause, endured the years of war, and then continued serving the court during the period of national reconstruction after victory.
It was precisely this combination of founding merit and long-term service that gave Lê Thận his distinctive place in both history and the cultural memory of Lam Sơn.

Lê Thận
Lê Lợi
Thiết đột
Lê Thận 经常与 Lê Văn An、Lê Văn Linh 一同紧随 Lê Lợi 左右。
“Trung Tiết”
