Lê Triện (? – 1427)

Lê Triện (? – 1427)

Quân Minh ở Nghệ An buộc phải rút về Đông Đô.

Background

Lê Triện was a native of Bái Đô settlement, Lôi Dương District, Thanh Hóa. His father was Lê Ba Lao. He lived during a period when the country was under Ming rule and joined Lê Lợi at an early stage in raising the banner of revolt at Lam Sơn. Historical sources describe Lê Triện as a man whose “talent, courage, and strategic ability surpassed those of others,” while also showing that he endured many years of arduous fighting alongside the insurgent forces from the uprising’s earliest days.

Unlike some other meritorious officials who belonged to Lê Lợi’s direct lineage, Lê Triện’s position was established primarily through his own abilities and military achievements. From the earliest battles in Thanh Hóa to the decisive campaigns in northern Đại Việt, he was repeatedly entrusted with important missions: at times serving as the vanguard, at times acting as a supporting force, and at other times directly commanding a large army advancing against Đông Đô. This process shows that he was one of the commanders who gradually matured alongside the development of the Lam Sơn uprising.

Historical Context

Lê Triện joined the uprising during the most difficult stage of the war against the Ming. In the early years, the Lam Sơn insurgents had to contend with repeated Ming pursuit while also facing pressure on several occasions from forces operating in the frontier regions. After consolidating their strength, the insurgents gradually shifted from defense to counteroffensive, expanding their operations from Thanh Hóa into Nghệ An and then advancing northward.

Particularly from 1425 to 1426, the uprising entered its decisive stage. The Lam Sơn forces successively gained control over extensive territories, advanced northward, and threatened Đông Đô. The Ming were compelled to send large-scale reinforcements from China under the command of Vương Thông. From this point onward, northern Đại Việt became the main theater of battles decisive to the course of the war. During this process, Lê Triện played a prominent role, directly participating in campaigns to attack, besiege, and isolate Đông Đô.

Career

Lê Triện followed Lê Lợi in the uprising from its earliest days and quickly demonstrated his military ability. In the year Canh Tý (1420), when the Ming generals Lý Bân and Phương Chính led troops through the territory of Cẩm Lạn, a local chieftain of Quỳ Châu, and advanced into Mường Thôi to attack the insurgents, Lê Triện, together with Lê Lý and Lê Vấn, led several thousand light troops to intercept them. Meanwhile, Lê Lợi arranged an ambush at Bồ Mộng. The Ming army was attacked from several directions and was routed.

By the tenth lunar month of the year Nhâm Dần (1422), after driving back the Lao forces, Lê Lợi stationed his army at Quan Gia before withdrawing to Khôi settlement under combined pressure from the Ming and Lao forces. The Ming brought a large army to surround the insurgents. Lê Lợi ordered his commanders and soldiers to fight decisively; Lê Triện, together with Lê Lĩnh and Lê Vấn, charged directly into battle, killing the Assistant Commander Phùng Quý together with more than 1,000 enemy soldiers and capturing more than one hundred warhorses.

After this battle, when the insurgents were forced to remain at Linh Sơn and suffered from a prolonged shortage of provisions lasting more than two months, Lê Triện and the other commanders regularly patrolled, encouraged the troops, and stayed constantly beside Lê Lợi without neglecting their duties.

A turning point in Lê Triện’s career came in 1425, when the insurgents began shifting to the offensive. In the spring of the year Ất Tỵ (1425), while Lê Lợi was besieging Nghệ An Citadel, Lê Triện was assigned to serve as a supporting force for Lê Lễ. He then took a shortcut to launch a surprise attack, defeated the Ming forces, and advanced to besiege Tây Đô. For these achievements, he was promoted to the rank of Thiếu úy.

By the eighth lunar month of the year Bính Ngọ (1426), Lê Lợi assigned Phạm Văn Xảo and Lê Triện to command 3,000 troops and one war elephant, conducting operations through the regions of Thiên Quan, Quảng Oai, Quốc Oai, Quy Hóa, Gia Hưng, Đà Giang, Tam Đái, and Tuyên Quang. Lê Triện then took a shortcut and advanced against Đông Đô.

The Ming Assistant Commander Trần Trí, seeing that Lê Triện’s forces were few in number, led troops out of the citadel to confront him. At Ninh Kiểu in Ứng Thiên Prefecture, Lê Triện, together with Trịnh Khả and Đỗ Bí, vigorously attacked the Ming forces before advancing and constructing fortifications to the west of Ninh Giang.

This offensive had particular significance for the overall course of the war. Trần Trí was compelled to reinforce the defenses of Đông Đô while urgently notifying Lý An and Phương Chính and ordering them to abandon Nghệ An and return as reinforcements. The Ming forces in Nghệ An were thus forced to withdraw toward Đông Đô. Taking advantage of this situation, Lê Lợi advanced toward Tây Đô. When the districts and prefectures heard that the insurgent army had returned to Thanh Hóa, many people came to join them. The prestige and strength of the uprising consequently grew.

Historical sources observe that this shift was in part brought about by Lê Triện’s earlier attack on Đông Đô, which put the Ming forces on the defensive and created favorable conditions for the insurgents to expand their influence.

In the ninth lunar month of 1426, Lê Triện again engaged the Ming army at Nhân Mục Bridge, killing more than 1,000 enemy soldiers and capturing the Regional Military Commissioner Vi Lượng.

When Ming reinforcements under Thành Sơn hầu Vương Thông and Trần Hiệp arrived from China with approximately 50,000 troops and 5,000 horses, Lê Triện became one of the commanders directly confronting this main force. Vương Thông divided his army into three columns and established camps stretching for dozens of dặm around Đông Đô.

Faced with a large and highly confident enemy force, Lê Triện and Đỗ Bí adopted a flexible strategy: they established an ambush at Cổ Lam, used mobile troops to provoke the enemy, attacked the camps of Mã Kỳ and Sơn Thọ, and then pretended to retreat in defeat.

The Ming troops pursued them and entered the marshlands near Tam La Bridge, where the Lam Sơn ambush forces suddenly emerged and attacked. The Ming suffered a major defeat, with more than 1,000 soldiers killed and more than 500 captured. Lê Triện then intended to attack Phương Chính’s rear camp, but the Ming forces had already withdrawn in time.

The following day, he again attacked Vương Thông’s camp at Cổ Sở. On this occasion, the Ming had installed iron spikes and bamboo barriers to defend against war elephants, placing the Lam Sơn troops at a disadvantage. Lê Triện promptly destroyed the enemy’s former camp and withdrew to a defensible position before sending word to Lê Lễ. The two forces subsequently joined at Cao Bộ and discussed their next strategy.

The resulting plan led to the Battle of Tốt Động–Chúc Động, one of the decisive victories of the Lam Sơn uprising. The Lam Sơn army lured the Ming forces across the Ninh River and into the Tốt Động–Chúc Động area, where ambush forces simultaneously attacked from three directions.

The Ming suffered a devastating defeat. Trần Hiệp and Lý Lượng were killed, Phương Chính fled back to Cổ Sở, while Vương Thông, Mã Kỳ, and Sơn Thọ retreated into Đông Đô. Following the victory, the insurgents captured a large quantity of military supplies, weapons, warhorses, and documents from the Ming forces and then advanced to surround Đông Đô.

Thus, Lê Triện’s role in the campaigns of 1426 was significant not only because he directly won a series of battles, but also because of his ability to actively shape the battlefield situation, forcing the Ming forces to disperse and placing them on the defensive. His decision to attack Đông Đô before the arrival of Ming reinforcements contributed to creating favorable conditions for the insurgents in the confrontations that followed.

In the spring of the year Đinh Mùi (1427), Lê Triện continued to be entrusted with an important responsibility. The insurgent army was stationed north of the Lô River, and Lê Lợi divided the commanders among different defensive positions. Lê Triện was placed in command of 20,000 troops and assigned to guard the northern gate, one of the most strategically important positions.

In the second lunar month, Phương Chính suddenly led troops to attack Quả settlement in Từ Liêm. Lê Triện and Đỗ Bí resisted vigorously. During this battle, Lê Triện was killed. Đỗ Bí was captured by the Ming and was only returned after Vương Thông withdrew his army from the country.

Family

Lê Triện was the son of Lê Ba Lao. After Lê Triện was killed in battle, Lê Lợi rewarded his father, Lê Ba Lao, with the office of Quan sát sứ, the rank of Thượng phẩm, and 400 mẫu of land.

His son, Lê Lăng, was appointed Phòng ngự sứ, granted the rank of Thượng trí tự, conferred the title Phục hầu, and presented with two horses.

Final Years and Worship

Lê Triện was killed in the second lunar month of the year Đinh Mùi (1427), during fighting against the Ming forces in the Từ Liêm area. At that time, the uprising had entered its decisive phase, as the Lam Sơn army had recently achieved major victories and was organizing its forces to surround Đông Đô.

For Lê Lợi, this was a major loss. Lê Lợi regarded Lê Triện as a man of great merit who had repeatedly defeated powerful enemies and had died in the service of the country. He therefore mourned him deeply and bestowed rewards upon his family.

In the first year of the Thuận Thiên era (1428), after the Lê dynasty was formally established, Lê Triện was posthumously appointed Nhập nội Tư mã.

In the first year of the Quang Thuận era (1460), because his son Lê Lăng had rendered meritorious service, Lê Triện was further posthumously granted the office of Hữu tướng quốc.

In the fifteenth year of the Hồng Đức era (1484), under the reign of Lê Thánh Tông, he was posthumously granted the title Thái bảo Kỳ quận công and was later further elevated to Tây Kỳ vương.

Assessment

Lê Triện was one of the representative military commanders of the Lam Sơn uprising, distinguished by his military talent, mobility, and decisiveness on the battlefield. While his early years in the uprising were associated with small-scale, mobile, and ambush-based engagements in Thanh Hóa, from 1425 onward he was entrusted with increasingly large-scale campaigns and directly participated in the insurgents’ transition from a defensive position to a general counteroffensive.

Lê Triện’s most notable contribution came during the campaigns of 1426. With a relatively small force, he advanced against Đông Đô, forcing the Ming army to reinforce its defenses and recall troops from Nghệ An. This contributed to an important shift in the military situation. Later, in confronting the reinforcements commanded by Vương Thông, he continued to employ ambushes, feigned maneuvers, and mobile tactics to exploit the enemy’s weaknesses.

The battles at Ninh Kiểu, Nhân Mục, Cổ Lam, and the Tốt Động–Chúc Động area show that Lê Triện was not merely a courageous commander who personally charged into battle, but also one capable of organizing troops and applying tactics suited to the relative strengths of the opposing forces.

During one of the uprising’s most difficult periods in 1422, when the Lam Sơn army suffered a prolonged shortage of food at Linh Sơn, Lê Triện and the other commanders patrolled the area, encouraged the soldiers, and remained constantly beside Lê Lợi.

He was killed while holding a strategically important position to the north of Đông Đô, only a few months before the uprising achieved complete victory. He had contributed to the success of the uprising but did not live to witness the end of the war. For this reason, Lê Lợi’s assessment that he “had rendered great service, repeatedly defeated powerful enemies, and died in the service of the country” was not merely an expression of grief for a fallen commander, but also an affirmation of his place in the establishment of the Later Lê dynasty.

Lê Triện may be regarded as a representative figure of the generation of Lam Sơn military commanders who matured through successive battles: from mobile engagements in the mountainous areas of Thanh Hóa to decisive campaigns on the northern battlefields; from a commander personally leading assault troops to one entrusted with tens of thousands of soldiers at a strategically vital position.

Historians of Đại Việt under the Later Lê dynasty, notably Ngô Sĩ Liên and Lê Quý Đôn, both highly praised the military abilities of Lê Triện:

“Khuất Hà became accustomed to victory at Bồ Tao and as a result suffered defeat and destruction; his was a brutal army, isolated and invading a small country. Lê Lễ likewise became accustomed to victory at Tốt Động and for that reason also suffered defeat, but his was an army driven by righteous indignation and the desire for revenge. Although the two men alike ended in defeat, their intentions were entirely different. Therefore, among the outstanding generals of that time, Lễ and Triện deserved to stand foremost.”¹

“The people of the country still feared the might of the Ngô enemy and had not yet all submitted to the king. After the victory at Tốt Động, our army proceeded to surround Đông Đô. Scholars and commoners throughout the prefectures and districts responded in great numbers. Men of outstanding talent, intelligence, and courage came to join as though going to a marketplace. Enemy citadels in various places were successively captured or surrendered, while the three Ming commissions had to close the city gates and defend themselves to the death; pressed to the utmost, they were forced to seek peace. Within the space of one year, the entire country was pacified. All of this was due to the achievements of men such as Lê Lễ and Lê Triện.”²

Lê Triện

Trần Trí 被迫加强 Đông Đô 的防御,同时紧急通知 Lý An 和 Phương Chính,要求他们放弃 Nghệ An,回师救援。

Lê Triện
