Mặc dù bản thân Nguyễn Văn Thành chủ động tâu trình toàn bộ sự việc lên Gia Long, vụ án vẫn ngày càng bị mở rộng.

Background
Nguyễn Văn Thành (1758-1817) was one of the prominent meritorious officials and famous generals of the early Nguyễn dynasty. He was born on the 13th day of the 11th lunar month in the Mậu Dần year, 1758, into a family with a military tradition and several generations of migration to the South. His ancestors originally came from Bác Vọng commune, Phú Ốc canton, Quảng Điền district, Triệu Phong prefecture, Thuận Hóa region, now in Thừa Thiên Huế province. By the generation of his great-grandfather Nguyễn Văn Toán, the family had moved to live in Gia Định; later, his grandfather Nguyễn Văn Tính settled in Bình Hòa, while his father Nguyễn Văn Hiền continued to make a living and establish himself in the Gia Định region.
From childhood, Nguyễn Văn Thành followed his father into military service and was trained early in a military environment amid a context of continuous warfare in the country. Unlike many military generals of his time who were known mainly for strength and strategic ability, he was also fond of learning, loved books, and possessed fairly broad knowledge.
Career
The Period of Following Nguyễn Phúc Ánh
Nguyễn Văn Thành early followed his father, Nguyễn Văn Hiền, in joining the forces of the Nguyễn lord against the Tây Sơn movement. In 1773, when the Tây Sơn army was increasingly expanding its power in Đàng Trong, he and his father went to Phú Yên to follow and assist Định Vương Nguyễn Phúc Thuần. In 1775, his father was killed in battle at Phú Yên, leaving Nguyễn Văn Thành to continue the military path while still very young.
In the following years, he served under the command of the generals Nguyễn Văn Hoàng and then directly followed Nguyễn Phúc Ánh. During the period when the Nguyễn forces were repeatedly defeated by the Tây Sơn, Nguyễn Văn Thành remained wholeheartedly attached to his lord and did not abandon the ranks because of danger. When someone advised him to temporarily return to his native place after the defeat at Mỹ Tho in 1787, he resolutely replied: “The duty between ruler and subject must be followed in life and death; success or failure depends on Heaven, so how could one leave merely because of defeat?” This absolute loyalty helped him become one of the generals especially trusted by Nguyễn Phúc Ánh.
During the period of exile in Siam, Nguyễn Văn Thành and Lê Văn Quân commanded Nguyễn troops in coordination with Siamese forces to defeat the Burmese army. After the victory, the king of Siam expressed his intention to continue sending a large army to help Nguyễn Phúc Ánh recover Gia Định. In response to this proposal, Nguyễn Văn Thành offered a famous admonition, arguing that excessive dependence on foreign troops would leave long-term dangers for the country. He advocated strengthening their own forces and waiting for a favorable opportunity to regain the country by their own strength. This opinion was approved by Nguyễn Phúc Ánh and showed a political vision that went beyond immediate military calculations.
Many Military Achievements in the War against the Tây Sơn
After returning to Gia Định, Nguyễn Văn Thành quickly became one of the pillars of the Nguyễn army. In 1788, he was appointed Khâm sai Tổng nhung Cai cơ hiệu úy Tiền chi dinh Trung quân, directly taking part in the command of many major campaigns.
In the Bình Thuận campaign of 1790, he was both a military commander and the person responsible for mediating the conflict between the two famous generals Lê Văn Quân and Võ Tánh. When Lê Văn Quân suffered defeat and was besieged by the Tây Sơn army, only Nguyễn Văn Thành turned back to rescue him, helping preserve the forces. This event demonstrated his sense of responsibility, caution, and ability to handle battlefield situations.
By the end of 1800, Nguyễn Văn Thành and Lê Văn Duyệt commanded troops to relieve the siege of Quy Nhơn Citadel. The two men coordinated and achieved many military successes, contributing to a turning point in the war against the Tây Sơn. However, because of differences in personality and command methods, discord gradually arose between them. Even so, this did not reduce the trust Nguyễn Phúc Ánh placed in Nguyễn Văn Thành.
In 1801, he was assigned the position of Khâm sai Chưởng Tiền quân, Great General for Pacifying the West, commanding infantry divisions, and was granted the title of Duke. This was one of the highest military offices under Nguyễn Phúc Ánh, showing his special position among the founding meritorious officials.
Gia Long once remarked that Nguyễn Văn Thành was a man who “worked carefully and discreetly, and could take charge of an entire region.” Many major military and state affairs were also discussed with him before decisions were made. According to Nguyễn-dynasty historical sources, Nguyễn Văn Thành was a general who always carefully weighed the strengths and weaknesses of both his own side and the enemy before launching a campaign. Thanks to this, he minimized losses among soldiers while still achieving high combat effectiveness. This was also what distinguished him from many generals famous for bravery but inclined toward direct confrontation.
Governor-General of Bắc Thành
After the Nguyễn dynasty unified the country, Emperor Gia Long decided to make Phú Xuân the capital, while Thăng Long became the administrative center of Bắc Thành. In the process of consolidating the governing apparatus in the North, Emperor Gia Long appointed Nguyễn Văn Thành as Governor-General of Bắc Thành, granting him full authority over the eleven towns of Bắc Hà. This was the most powerful office in the North at that time, allowing him to directly handle many administrative, military, and judicial affairs without waiting for approval from the imperial court.
During his administration of Bắc Thành, he focused on stabilizing society after many years of civil war. He advocated tax reductions, reasonable land distribution, attention to dike works for disaster prevention, and repeatedly requested that the court open granaries for relief when the people suffered crop failures and famine. These policies contributed to quickly stabilizing economic life and helping Bắc Hà gradually recover after the war.
According to Hoàng Việt nhất thống dư địa chí, Thăng Long Citadel was built according to a new plan with a grand scale, a solid system of walls, five gates, surrounding moats, and military barracks arranged in an orderly manner. Inside the citadel, Kính Thiên Palace was preserved as the center, while a tall flag tower was built as a place for issuing military signals. Outside the citadel, roads, residential areas, and markets were neatly planned, contributing to a new appearance for the capital city of Thăng Long under the Nguyễn dynasty. The construction began in the summer of the Giáp Tý year, 1804, and was completed in the autumn of the Ất Sửu year, 1805.
Nguyễn Văn Thành was not only concerned with national defense and administration, but also paid special attention to the development of education and culture. In 1805, he ordered the construction of Khuê Văn Các at the Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám, in front of Thiên Quang Well. The structure was designed with two levels; the upper level was a graceful wooden pavilion with eight roofs, and its four sides had circular windows symbolizing the light of the Khuê star, an emblem of literature and talented scholars in Confucian thought. The two side gates named Súc Văn and Bí Văn further highlighted the meaning of honoring learning and the tradition of studiousness. The construction of Khuê Văn Các was not only intended to complete the landscape of the Văn Miếu but also reflected Nguyễn Văn Thành’s idea of valuing education and encouraging the training of talented people. After more than two centuries, this structure is still regarded as a symbol of the cultural tradition of Thăng Long-Hanoi and one of the most representative architectural relics of Vietnamese Confucian education.
Contributions to Culture and Thought
Nguyễn Văn Thành was not only a famous general but also left a deep mark in the field of literature. At the end of 1802, he composed and recited Văn tế tướng sĩ trận vong during the memorial ceremony for those who had fallen in battle after many years of civil war. The work is considered one of the outstanding funeral orations of Vietnamese literature in the early nineteenth century, expressing profound humanistic thought by commemorating all those who had died because of war, regardless of which side they belonged to.
It can be seen that Nguyễn Văn Thành’s career was not limited to the role of a military commander but extended into many fields such as administrative management, education, culture, diplomacy, and national defense. He was a rare model of a man accomplished in both civil and military affairs, making important contributions to Nguyễn Phúc Ánh’s victory in the unification of the country and also contributing significantly to the building and consolidation of the foundations of the Nguyễn dynasty in its early years. However, his great position and increasingly high prestige later made him the object of suspicion, leading to the famous political case that ended the life of one of the most outstanding meritorious officials of the Gia Long period.
Drafting the Hoàng Việt Law Code
In 1810, after many years as Governor-General of Bắc Thành, Nguyễn Văn Thành was recalled by Emperor Gia Long to the capital Phú Xuân and appointed Commander of the Central Army. With the prestige of a great minister knowledgeable in military affairs, administration, and law, he was entrusted, together with Vũ Trinh and Trần Hựu, with the role of chief compiler of the Hoàng Việt luật lệ, commonly known as the Gia Long Code, the first official law code of the Nguyễn dynasty.
The compilation began in 1811 and was completed in 1812, before the code was officially promulgated throughout the country. With nearly 400 articles, the code regulated quite fully many fields, from the organization of the state apparatus, administration, military affairs, civil matters, marriage and family, to legal procedure and criminal law. Although it was deeply influenced by the Great Qing Code, Nguyễn Văn Thành and his colleagues still made adjustments to suit Vietnamese social realities. Before the code was promulgated, he submitted a memorial explaining his view that establishing law was not intended to increase punishment, but primarily to educate the people, maintain order, and limit the need to use punishment. This view reflected a governing philosophy that valued state law while still aiming at social stability and the reduction of wrongful judgments.
In the process of finalizing the code, many extremely harsh punishments from Qing law, such as death by slow slicing, extermination of three kinship groups, and castration, were not retained in full or were mitigated. In particular, the code stipulated that ordinary cases should generally be tried in autumn, in order to ensure caution in decisions involving human life. This is regarded as one of the points showing the relatively progressive humanitarian character of the Hoàng Việt luật lệ compared with many contemporary law codes in the region.
Also during this period, Nguyễn Văn Thành continued to be assigned the position of Chief Compiler of the Quốc Sử Quán, in charge of compiling Quốc triều thực lục, the first official history of the Nguyễn dynasty. He once submitted many recommendations to Emperor Gia Long on selecting additional Confucian officials with learning and moral character to participate in compiling historical works, because in his view, national history had to be written by capable and impartial people. This shows that he was concerned not only with immediate governance but also deeply aware of the role of historiography for later generations.
Disagreements over the Choice of Successor
Alongside his great contributions, from the final years of Gia Long’s reign, Nguyễn Văn Thành’s political position began to decline. One important cause came from differences in views on the choice of successor.
When Emperor Gia Long prepared the question of succession, many different opinions appeared at court. Nguyễn Văn Thành was said to favor appointing Imperial Grandson Mỹ Đường, the son of Prince Cảnh, as successor, while Gia Long increasingly leaned toward Prince Nguyễn Phúc Đảm, later Emperor Minh Mạng. On many occasions discussing rituals and succession, Nguyễn Văn Thành expressed views that were not entirely in line with the emperor’s intention. This caused Gia Long to become gradually dissatisfied, and the distance between ruler and subject grew wider.
According to Nguyễn-dynasty historical records, he repeatedly expressed opinions on the choice of successor before officials at court. Although there was no evidence showing that he truly intended to interfere in the succession, in the sensitive political context of the time, those statements made Gia Long suspect that Nguyễn Văn Thành wanted, through the enthronement of a young ruler, to increase his influence over the court.
Final Years and Worship
Final Years
The final tragedy of Nguyễn Văn Thành’s life originated from a poem by his eldest son, Nguyễn Văn Thuyên. In 1815, Nguyễn Văn Thuyên composed a poem and sent it to scholars in Thanh Hóa. In the poem, two lines were interpreted by some people as alluding to seeking assistance to change the fate of the country. A former retainer named Nguyễn Trương Hiệu took advantage of this content to accuse Nguyễn Văn Thuyên of plotting rebellion, and the matter was quickly brought before the court.
Although Nguyễn Văn Thành himself proactively reported the entire matter to Gia Long, the case continued to expand. Many officials who had been at odds with him seized the opportunity to submit memorials accusing him, claiming that the poem reflected the political ambitions of both father and son. During the investigation, the explanations of Nguyễn Văn Thành and Nguyễn Văn Thuyên were not accepted.
At first, Gia Long still showed caution, believing that one should not convict a meritorious official who had followed him for more than thirty years based solely on a poem. However, under the pressure of many great ministers and amid an atmosphere of suspicion at court, the emperor gradually changed his attitude. In early 1816, Nguyễn Văn Thành was stripped of military authority, ordered to surrender his seals, and suspended from all offices; his son was imprisoned for interrogation.
By 1817, the case reached its conclusion. Seeing no opportunity to clear his name, Nguyễn Văn Thành left behind a final memorial expressing his grievance, affirming that father and son had been falsely accused and had no one to appeal to. In the end, he was forced to drink poison and commit suicide in prison, at the age of sixty. Nguyễn Văn Thuyên was later executed by beheading, and many members of the family were also implicated.
Worship
Under Emperor Tự Đức, after many memorials were submitted by high officials requesting that the case be reconsidered, the court conducted a review of Nguyễn Văn Thành’s merits and faults. In the 21st year of Tự Đức’s reign, 1868, the emperor officially issued an edict restoring his honor, reinstating his original title of Commander of the Central Army, Great General for Pacifying the West, and Duke, while also allowing him to be worshiped at the Trung Hưng Công Thần Temple. The restoration edict affirmed that his contributions to the Nguyễn dynasty’s restoration were very great and could not be entirely denied because of the mistake of his son, since he had once “fought a hundred battles and established many great merits.” This is regarded as the Nguyễn court’s official vindication of Nguyễn Văn Thành more than half a century after his death.
Today, Nguyễn Văn Thành’s tomb is located in Thủy Phương commune, Hương Thủy town, Huế city. On the tombstone, his full title is still engraved with the inscription: “Tomb of the late Vietnamese Imperial Commissioner, Commander of the Central Army, Great General for Pacifying the West, Duke Thành.” The tomb complex was built according to the standards for a high-ranking Nguyễn official, with stone steles, ceremonial pillars, and decorative motifs symbolizing the honoring of the deceased’s merits.
In addition to the tomb, the temple of Central Army Commander Nguyễn Văn Thành in Tân An ward, Thủ Dầu Một city, Bình Dương, is also a historical relic of long-standing value. The temple was built around 1820, only a few years after his death, using sao wood taken from the local forest. Over more than two centuries, the temple has been preserved by the people and has become a place to commemorate the famous general who rendered many services to Southern Vietnam. Every year, Nguyễn Văn Thành’s death anniversary is held on the 15th day of the 11th lunar month, attracting members of his lineage and many local residents to offer incense and remember the merits of one of the most representative meritorious officials of the early nineteenth-century Nguyễn dynasty.
Family
Nguyễn Văn Thành’s father was Nguyễn Văn Hiền, a military official who followed the Nguyễn lords. In the early years of the war against the Tây Sơn movement, Nguyễn Văn Hiền and his son followed Định Vương Nguyễn Phúc Thuần in defending the Phú Yên region. In the 7th lunar month of 1775, he was killed in a clash with the Tây Sơn army. The sacrifice of his father deeply influenced Nguyễn Văn Thành, helping foster his loyalty and determination to continue following the Nguyễn family throughout his military life. Nguyễn Văn Thành’s mother is not recorded by official historical sources in terms of name or background.
Regarding marriage, the name and origin of Nguyễn Văn Thành’s wife are currently unknown.
His son Nguyễn Văn Thuyên was known for being fond of learning and literature, and he once passed the Hương cống degree. However, the poem he composed became the cause of the serious political case of 1816. The poem was accused of having rebellious intent, leading to Nguyễn Văn Thuyên being executed by beheading.
Assessment and Evaluation
Nguyễn Văn Thành was one of the most outstanding meritorious officials and famous generals of the early Nguyễn dynasty, and at the same time a representative figure who combined military, political, and cultural talents. During nearly half a century of assisting Nguyễn Phúc Ánh, he made important contributions to the restoration of the Nguyễn family’s cause, the unification of the country, and the establishment of the foundations of the state apparatus under Gia Long. Not only outstanding in military command, he also demonstrated administrative ability as Governor-General of Bắc Thành, participated in compiling the Hoàng Việt luật lệ, directed the construction of Thăng Long Citadel, built Khuê Văn Các, and made many proposals regarding education, administration, and social welfare. This shows that he was not only an excellent military general but also a visionary politician and a learned Confucian general.
However, Nguyễn Văn Thành’s life also reflects the political tragedies of the early Nguyễn dynasty. Although he had established many brilliant merits and was greatly trusted by Emperor Gia Long, he could not escape the spiral of suspicion within the court. The case related to his son’s poem caused him to be accused of rebellion and to suffer an unjust death in 1817. This is considered one of the most famous and controversial cases involving a meritorious official in Nguyễn-dynasty history.
Later, under Emperor Tự Đức, Nguyễn Văn Thành’s merits were reconsidered. He was vindicated, had his title restored, and was allowed to be worshiped at the Trung Hưng Công Thần Temple. This restoration of honor not only affirmed his great contributions to the Nguyễn dynasty’s restoration but also showed that history eventually recognized the proper place of a talented meritorious official accomplished in both civil and military affairs. With his contributions in military affairs, politics, law, and culture, Nguyễn Văn Thành deserves to be regarded as one of the most influential figures in the formation and consolidation of the Nguyễn dynasty in the early nineteenth century.

Origines
