Truc Son Communal House (Hai Phong)
Geographic Location and Name
Truc Son Village (Han characters: 竹山) is now part of Dong Son Commune, Thuy Nguyen District, Hai Phong City. Over the course of administrative history, the place name Truc Son underwent multiple changes in status and governing units, reflecting shifts in administrative organization across different periods.
Before 1945, Truc Son was a commune belonging to Duong Chinh Canton, Thuy Nguyen Prefecture, Kien An Province. Earlier, prior to 1813, Truc Son was Truc Son Hamlet, under Duong Chan Canton, Thuy Duong District, Kinh Mon Prefecture, Hai Duong Garrison. During the reign of Emperor Dong Khanh of the Nguyen dynasty, Truc Son was elevated to the status of a commune. In the same period, Truc Son Commune incorporated Tra Son Hamlet, now Tra Son Village of Kenh Giang Commune.
Before 1901, Duong Chan Canton was renamed Duong Chinh Canton. Administrative records from different periods also show variations in the recording of the local name: the 1927 list of villages and communes records it as Chuc Son Commune, while the divine genealogy compiled in 1938 records it as Truc Son. These variations not only reflect linguistic and script characteristics of different periods but also help clarify the long process of formation and development of Truc Son Village in the history of the Thuy Nguyen area.
History and Worshipped Figures
Truc Son Communal House worships two Tutelary Deities.
The first deity: Nguyen tu Linh Quang (according to the inventory team, possibly Linh Quang Dai Vuong – Nguyen Hung of the Ly period). According to the Encyclopedic Dictionary of Hai Phong Place Names, Nguyen Hung was a talented figure during the time of Ly Nam De (503–548) who rendered meritorious service in suppressing Ai Lao incursions along the border. After his death in his homeland, the king ordered the establishment of a temple and conferred upon him the divine title “Linh Quang Dai Vuong.” He is also worshipped at Trinh Xa Temple (Trinh Xa Village, Thien Huong Commune).
However, according to the divine genealogy of Trinh Xa Temple, this figure lived during the Ly–Later Ly period (1009–1225), not the Early Ly period. Accordingly, during the reign of King Ly Nhan Tong (1066–1127), in Trinh Xa Hamlet there lived a local leader surnamed Nguyen, given name Trach. His wife, Tran Thi Chinh (Trinh), was gentle and virtuous, highly respected by the villagers. On the 12th day of the second lunar month in 1086, she gave birth to a son named Hung. From birth, the boy displayed extraordinary appearance and bearing. In 1104, Nguyen Hung assisted Ly Thuong Kiet in the campaign against Champa, achieving great merit. After returning victorious, he was generously rewarded by the king. He later requested to return to his homeland, where he hosted a grand feast for the villagers. He passed away on the 20th day of the tenth lunar month while celebrating with the people. Upon receiving the news, the king issued a royal edict instructing the villagers to establish a shrine for worship and granted him the honorific title “Duong Canh Thanh Hoang Linh Quang Dai Vuong.”
The second deity: Dong Hai Dai Vuong Doan Thuong, a historical figure of the Ly–Tran period. Dong Hai Dai Vuong, whose real name was Doan Thuong, was a general of the Ly dynasty and later a regional warlord opposing the court during the Ly–Tran transition. He was born on the 10th day of the first lunar month of the Giap Than year (1184) during the reign of King Ly Cao Tong and died in 1228. According to the Ngoc Pha of Hai Duong, he was the son of Doan Trung and Hoang Thi My, and a native of Thung Do Village, Gia Loc District, Hai Duong Province. The Dai Viet Su Ky Toan Thu records that he shared the same wet nurse as King Ly Cao Tong.
As the Ly court declined, Doan Thuong rose through his talents to become a prominent local leader in Hong Chau (covering present-day districts of Cam Giang, Binh Giang, Thanh Mien, Gia Loc, Ninh Giang, and Tu Ky of Hai Duong). Amid widespread unrest, he raised troops in his homeland against the court. King Ly Cao Tong repeatedly dispatched forces to suppress him without success. Later, recognizing the growing strength of the court, Doan Thuong secretly sought mediation through Pham Du, eventually receiving a pardon. He later assisted King Ly Hue Tong (formerly Crown Prince Sam) against the Tran clan led by Tran Tu Khanh, but the Tran forces proved too powerful. Consequently, Doan Thuong temporarily submitted, was granted the title of prince, and retained control over Hong Chau.
In 1223, after the death of Tran Tu Khanh, Tran Thu Do rose to power and orchestrated the transfer of the throne to Tran Canh, founding the Tran dynasty. Tran Thu Do subsequently led campaigns against Doan Thuong but failed militarily, resorting to promises of titles. He arranged a ceremonial assembly, but Doan Thuong did not attend. In 1228, Doan Thuong was killed by Nguyen Nau, a regional warlord based in the Bac Giang area. He died at the age of 45.
In addition, the communal house also worships a Later Deity (Hau Than), Lady Hoang Thi Con (Later Le period). She was originally from An Dong, An Duong District, and later married into the Ta family, settling in Truc Son Village. Together with her husband, she contributed to the establishment of Truc Son Village, an ancient settlement with a history of over 300 years (traditionally dated to the reign of King Le Duy Phuong, Vinh Khanh third year). She passed away on the 27th day of the eighth lunar month.
During the resistance war against French colonialism (1945–1954), Truc Son Communal House served as a place to shelter revolutionary cadres and soldiers. Within the communal house grounds, one resistance fighter was brutally killed by the enemy.
Architecture and Artifacts
At present, except for the two end-bay structural frames of the front hall, which have been restored and rebuilt, Truc Son Communal House retains almost intact its original architectural framework. Researchers date this structure to no later than around 1921. Architecturally, the communal house follows the chu Dinh (丁-shaped) layout with a projecting rear section (chuoi vo), a common architectural form widely found in village communal houses across Northern Vietnam and characteristic of the Thuy Nguyen area.
The most prominent artistic value of the communal house lies in its decorative woodcarving system, including high-relief and pierced carvings concentrated on the bracket arms (con), the beam ends of the front hall, and the roof frames of the rear sanctuary. The carved motifs are rich and symbolic, featuring sacred themes such as the Four Sacred Creatures, dragons hidden in clouds, bamboo transforming into dragons, and ho phu (tiger masks). The sculptural style—both supple and vigorous in line—clearly reflects Nguyen-dynasty aesthetics and demonstrates the refined craftsmanship of traditional artisans. These values also testify to the awareness and efforts of the local community in preserving a religious and spiritual monument of outstanding historical, cultural, and artistic significance, not only for the locality but for Thuy Nguyen District as a whole.
Although the two end-bay structural frames were newly made in 2013, they are still elaborately decorated with stylized floral carvings arranged in balanced and harmonious compositions. The frames are also carved with Han characters bearing auspicious meanings, such as “Phuc” – “Loc” (Blessing – Prosperity) and “Thanh anh linh” – “Dan khang thinh” (Sacred efficacy – People’s well-being and prosperity). These inscriptions express the villagers’ aspirations and faith in the spiritual protection and blessings of the Tutelary Deities, hoping for peace, abundance, and happiness in daily life.
Festival
Annually, according to tradition, Truc Son Communal House maintains three main ritual occasions (by the lunar calendar): the traditional festival from the 9th to the 11th of the first lunar month; the death anniversary of the Later Deity Lady Hoang Thi Con on the 27th day of the eighth lunar month; and the year-end communal rite on the 8th day of the eleventh lunar month.
During the main festival (9–11/01), the communal house often invites ritual delegations from localities with long-standing ties, including My Dong, Tan Duong, Thuy Duong, Hoa Binh, and Kenh Giang communes, to participate in ceremonial exchanges and offerings. In the past, the village festival also featured a procession of the deity’s palanquin around the village, a practice that has gradually faded over time.
The Truc Son Communal House Festival remains one of the traditional festivals that preserve a wide range of folk games, notably Chinese chess, cockfighting, tug of war, clay pot smashing, swing riding, as well as sports activities such as volleyball and badminton.

Dinh Truc Son (Hai Phong)

- 正月初九至十一日举行传统庙会;
- 八月二十七日为后神**黄氏昆(Hoang Thi Con)忌辰;
