Trinh Kha (1403–1451)
Background
Trinh Kha was a native of Giang Dong village, Soc Son commune (now Vinh Hoa), Vinh Ninh district, Thanh Hoa province. His family had a tradition of official service dating back to the Tran dynasty; his ancestors had taken part in resisting the Yuan invaders and earned considerable merit. His father, Trinh Quyen, served as a local chief (chanh tong) and had four sons, of whom Trinh Kha was the youngest, born in the year Quy Mui (1403).
Trinh Kha grew up at a time when Dai Viet had fallen under Ming domination. On one occasion, while herding buffaloes, he rested at the gate of a mountain pagoda and encountered a Ming general passing by from Tay Do Citadel (Thanh Hoa). Noticing Trinh Kha’s unusual appearance, the general took a liking to him and seized him to be kept as a servant. After some time observing him closely, the Ming general blurted out: “This boy has the bearing of a dragon and the eyes of a tiger, with strength beyond ordinary men; in the future he will surely command the armies.” Immediately afterward, however, he changed his tone, saying: “One day, the one who drives us out of this land will surely be you. He must be killed at once, lest he bring disaster later.”
Hearing this, Trinh Kha was terrified. Taking advantage of a moment of negligence, he fled, crossed the Ma River, and hid at the home of his aunt in Dien Phuc commune. When the Ming troops learned of this, they pursued him but failed to capture him, and instead arrested his father Trinh Quyen to force Trinh Kha to surrender. Despite the threat, Trinh Kha resolutely refused to give himself up. Enraged, the Ming troops killed Trinh Quyen and threw his body into the river.
Upon learning of his father’s death, Trinh Kha was overcome with grief and rage. Late at night, he secretly returned to retrieve his father’s body for burial. This family tragedy, combined with the humiliation of national subjugation, drove him onto the path of saving the country. Not long afterward, he went to the Lam Son region to follow Le Loi and join the uprising, beginning a military career closely tied to the resistance against the Ming.
Participation in the Lam Son Uprising
According to Dai Viet Thong Su, Trinh Kha was one of the nineteen participants in the Lung Nhai Oath Conference (1416), where he and Le Loi swore brotherhood in the cause of national salvation. When the Lam Son uprising broke out, he constantly bore his sword at Le Loi’s side and was later promoted to deputy commander of the elite thiet dot unit. In 1418, when Ming troops exhumed the grave of Le Loi’s father Le Khoang and carried away the remains, Trinh Kha and Bui Bi disguised themselves, infiltrated the enemy boats, retrieved the remains, and returned them—an achievement of great merit.
Fluent in the Ai Lao language, Trinh Kha was entrusted with delivering letters to request aid from the king of Ai Lao, seeking troops, provisions, and war elephants, thereby strengthening the insurgent forces. In battles in Nghe An and Dien Chau, he always led assaults and achieved many victories, eventually being promoted to the rank of Thai giam.
In 1426, during the siege of Nghe An Citadel, he joined Pham Van Xao, Ly Trien, and Do Bi in leading 2,000 troops to patrol northern routes, cutting off Ming reinforcements from Yunnan. He then attacked Ming forces at Ninh Kieu, Tay Ninh Kieu, and Xa Loc Bridge, repeatedly crushing enemy relief forces. When the risk arose that two Ming armies might link up, Trinh Kha proactively blocked the Yunnan force, playing a crucial role in the victory at Tot Dong–Chuc Dong, which greatly enhanced Lam Son’s prestige. He was subsequently promoted to Thieu uy and entrusted with guarding the eastern gate of Dong Do Citadel.
At the end of 1427, when Ming reinforcements led by Lieu Thang and Moc Thanh advanced, Trinh Kha and Pham Van Xao held the Le Hoa Pass. After Lieu Thang was killed and Moc Thanh fled, Trinh Kha pursued them, killing more than ten thousand Ming soldiers and capturing many prisoners. Soon afterward, Vuong Thong was forced to seek negotiations and withdraw, and Trinh Kha’s fame reached its peak.
Participation in State Affairs
In 1428, Trinh Kha was granted the rank of Kim tu vinh loc dai phu and appointed Ta Lan ho ve tuong quan, receiving a golden fish-shaped pouch, silver tally, and the title of Thuong khinh xa do uy.
In 1429, when the court engraved the stele of meritorious officials, he was ennobled as Liet hau and entrusted with palace security. He served as Do thai giam of the four circuits, overseeing internal and external court affairs, concurrently holding the post of An phu su of Tuyen Quang. He was later further promoted to Hanh quan tong quan, commanding the elite thiet dot units.
That same year, the newly enthroned king of Ai Lao, Con Co, faced a rebellion by the traitor Kha Lai and sent elephants to request assistance. Le Thai To dispatched Trinh Kha to suppress the revolt, which he did swiftly, thereby stabilizing Ai Lao and strengthening diplomatic relations between the two states.
In 1433, Trinh Kha was further promoted as a Bao chinh cong than, Kim tu vinh loc dai phu, stationed at Luong Giang, holding the post of Nhap noi thieu bao and tham tri quan su, overseeing military affairs of the guards under the Hai Tay circuit, and receiving golden and silver tallies.
In 1434, under King Le Thai Tong, Trinh Kha requested to withdraw from central court duties and was appointed Tuyen uy dai su at Lang Son, overseeing both military and civil affairs, concurrently serving as Dong tong quan of the Nam Sach Ha Guard.
In 1437, after Le Sat was dismissed from office, Trinh Kha was summoned back to the capital and entrusted with key military responsibilities: Tong quan hanh quan, commanding chariot, cavalry, and elite troops, and overseeing the central imperial guards. He was subsequently promoted to Thieu bao, tham tri chinh su, and then Thieu uy.
In 1442, King Le Thai Tong toured the eastern regions and fell gravely ill at Con Son. Trinh Kha attended him, and after the king’s death, received the final mandate, escorted the imperial coffin back to the capital, and joined the court in enthroning Crown Prince Bang Co, who became King Le Nhan Tong.
In 1443, when Le Nhan Tong was still young and Empress Dowager Nguyen Thi Anh acted as regent, Trinh Kha was granted the title Nhap noi suy trung Ta ly Duong Vu cong than, appointed Loi Giang tran phu quan thuong tuong quan, commanding the guards of the Western Circuit, and ennobled as Quan thuong hau.
In 1446, the Cham king Bi Cai twice invaded Hoa Chau. The court appointed Trinh Kha as vanguard commander to suppress the incursions. He captured Thi Nai Citadel, persuaded Bi Cai’s nephew Ta Quy Lai to submit, and then used him to convince Bi Cai to surrender. The court subsequently installed Ta Quy Lai as king of Champa. Upon his return, Trinh Kha was ennobled as Quoc thuong hau and promoted to Khai phu nghi dong tam ty, Nhap noi thieu uy, kiem hieu binh chuong quan quoc trong su, and awarded a golden tally.
Along with Le Thu, Trinh Kha stood as one of the foremost senior ministers of the court. He was renowned for his integrity and strict adherence to law and discipline, taking responsibility for guiding and admonishing the young king, handling affairs impartially, and never showing leniency out of personal sentiment.
Death
In the autumn, on the 26th day of the seventh lunar month of the year Tan Mui, Thai Hoa 19 (1451), Empress Dowager Nguyen Thi Anh ordered Trinh Kha and his son Trinh Ba Quat to be executed, following slander that they had formed a faction.
In 1453, when Le Nhan Tong came of age and personally assumed governance, he restored Trinh Kha’s titles and granted his descendants 100 mau of land. In 1484, King Le Thanh Tong posthumously honored him with the rank of Thieu pho Liet quoc cong, and later further elevated him to Hien Khanh Vuong, allowing him to be worshiped in the village shrine. Because of his merit in saving Le Thanh Tong’s mother when she was still a concubine of Le Thai Tong, his descendants received preferential treatment over other officials.
Assessments by Historians
Le Quy Don, in Kien van tieu luc, commented: “Trinh Kha followed the royal carriage from the days in Lam Son. His talent and wisdom surpassed his age, his adaptability knew no bounds. He defeated Vuong Thong, drove away Moc Thanh, killed Kha Lai of Ai Lao, captured Bi Cai, king of Champa. His fame resounded for a time. He had ten sons, all holding civil or military offices, their renown shining brightly—such a thing is rare in history. Kha was from Kim Boi commune, Vinh Ninh district, served as Thai uy, and was granted the title Liet quoc cong.” Nguyen Mong Tuan composed an inscription for the ancestral shrine of Trinh Kha, stating: “Mount Soc rises lofty, the Soc River runs deep, nurturing an exceptional man, like the Lords Phu and Than.” His son Cong Dan served as Minister of War and has a spirit-path stele still standing today in An Hoanh commune.
