Lê Quý Đôn sinh ngày 2 tháng 8 năm 1726 tại phường Bích Câu, kinh thành Thăng Long.
Đặc biệt, tại điện Hồng Lô, ông gặp đoàn sứ thần Triều Tiên do Hồng Khải Hi dẫn đầu.

Background
Lê Quý Đôn (1726-1784), whose childhood name was Lê Danh Phương, courtesy name Doãn Hậu, and sobriquet Quế Đường, was an eminent high-ranking official, historian, cultural figure, and outstanding scholar under the Revival Lê dynasty. With his vast body of writings and profound knowledge spanning many fields such as history, geography, philosophy, classical studies, literature, agriculture, and natural studies, he has been honored by later generations as one of the greatest polymaths of feudal Vietnam.
Lê Quý Đôn was born on August 2, 1726, in Bích Câu ward, in the imperial capital Thăng Long. His ancestral homeland was Diên Hà village, Sơn Nam town. He grew up in a family with many generations of examination success and official service, marked by a tradition of studiousness and respect for Confucian learning.
His father was Lê Trọng Thứ, formerly named Lê Phú Thứ, who passed the doctoral examination in the Giáp Thìn year, 1724, once held the position of Minister of Justice, and was granted the title Marquis of Nghĩa Phái. He was known for broad learning, integrity, and a profound influence on the education of his son from childhood. Lê Quý Đôn’s mother was Trương Thị Ích, daughter of Doctor Trương Minh Lượng, a high-ranking official who had held many important positions in the court and was granted the title Marquis of Hoằng Phái. Raised in a scholarly family environment, Lê Quý Đôn received a systematic Confucian education from an early age and revealed extraordinary intelligence.
From childhood, Lê Quý Đôn was famous as a prodigy, with an exceptional memory and the ability to read widely and understand deeply. Tradition holds that he could remember the contents of books after only a few readings and soon became well versed in the classics and histories. Thanks to his exceptional natural talent and rigorous training, he quickly became one of the most outstanding intellectuals of the eighteenth century, laying the foundation for his brilliant later political and scholarly career.
Career
From childhood, Lê Quý Đôn was famous for his intelligence, studiousness, and extraordinary memory. Growing up in a family with generations of examination success, he was directly taught Confucian learning by his father and trained according to the classical education of Confucianism. Tradition holds that at only five years old, he could recite many passages from the Book of Songs; by twelve, he had understood most of the classics, commentaries, historical works, and writings of the Hundred Schools. His intelligence caused contemporaries to praise him as a “prodigy” of the North.
In the Quý Hợi year, 1743, under the reign of King Lê Hiển Tông, when he was only eighteen, Lê Danh Phương sat for the Hương examination in Sơn Nam and ranked first, receiving the title Giải nguyên. After passing the examination, in order to avoid having the same name as Nguyễn Danh Phương, the leader of a peasant uprising then fighting against the court, he changed his name to Lê Quý Đôn, the name later associated with his scholarly and political career. During this period, he also married Lady Lê Thị Trang, daughter of Doctor Lê Hữu Kiều, thereby continuing his connection with a famous scholarly lineage of the time.
Although he ranked first in the Hương examination, Lê Quý Đôn’s path to advancement was not entirely smooth. For nearly ten years afterward, he sat for the Hội examination several times but did not achieve the result he desired. Instead of becoming discouraged, he spent time in his native place opening a school, teaching, and devoting himself to research and book compilation. This period laid the foundation for his later vast scholarly career. In 1749, he completed Đại Việt thông sử, also known as Lê triều thông sử, a valuable historical work that showed a serious research mindset even before he entered officialdom.
In the Nhâm Thân year, 1752, after nearly a decade of diligent study and research, Lê Quý Đôn again sat for the Hội examination and brilliantly ranked first, receiving the title Hội nguyên. In the Đình examination of the same year, he passed as Bảng nhãn, ranking first among the successful candidates because that examination did not award the title of Trạng nguyên. Thus, in all three important examinations of the civil service system—the Hương, Hội, and Đình examinations—Lê Quý Đôn achieved the highest rank, becoming one of the very few figures in Vietnamese examination history to attain such a special achievement.
Entering Officialdom
After passing the higher examination, in the Quý Dậu year, 1753, Lê Quý Đôn was appointed Thị thư of the Hanlin Academy, the office specializing in drafting imperial edicts, decrees, memorials, and important court documents. This marked the beginning of more than thirty years of service to the Revival Lê dynasty. With profound learning, quick administrative ability, and outstanding literary talent, he was soon highly valued by the court.
In the spring of the Giáp Tuất year, 1754, he was appointed Compiler of National History, taking part in compiling and revising the national histories. This task required extensive knowledge of history, civilization, and written sources, while also reflecting the court’s special trust in his scholarly ability.
In the Bính Tý year, 1756, Lê Quý Đôn was sent by the court to Sơn Nam to inspect official affairs. In the course of his work, he discovered and dealt with many officials who had engaged in corruption and bribery, helping restore administrative discipline in the locality. This achievement shows that he was not only an erudite scholar but also an upright and incorruptible official who always placed the law and national interests above all else.
Also in that year, he was transferred to the Trịnh lord’s residence to hold the position of Tri Binh phiên, in charge of certain military affairs of the lord’s government. Only a few months later, he was further assigned to coordinate the command of the Sơn Tây, Tuyên Quang, and Hưng Hóa forces in attacking the troops of the peasant leader Hoàng Công Chất, who was active in the northwest. Although he was not a professional military commander, Lê Quý Đôn still fulfilled the task well, demonstrating administrative and executive ability even in military matters.
In the Đinh Sửu year, 1757, he was promoted to Thị giảng of the Hanlin Academy, while also completing the work Quần thư khảo biện. This was a famous scholarly work in which he compared many different sources, analyzed them, and corrected errors in ancient texts. The work demonstrates an objective, careful research method and a critical scholarly mindset rarely seen among Vietnamese scholars in the feudal period.
Diplomatic Mission to the Qing Dynasty
In the Kỷ Mão year, 1759, King Lê Ý Tông passed away, and the court sent an embassy to the Qing dynasty to report the mourning and perform the annual tribute rites. Lê Quý Đôn was appointed Deputy Envoy, bearing the title Earl of Dĩnh Thành, and together with Chief Envoy Trần Huy Mật and Deputy Envoy Trịnh Xuân Chú led the diplomatic mission to China in 1760.
This was one of the important milestones in his diplomatic career. On the journey, Lê Quý Đôn showed courage and national self-respect by objecting to the derogatory terms “barbarian officials” and “barbarian heads” that some Qing officials used to refer to envoys of Đại Việt. After his justified protest, the Qing side changed the form of address to “An Nam tribute envoys,” showing greater respect toward the state of Đại Việt.
During his stay in Yanjing, Lê Quý Đôn’s profound learning was highly appreciated by many Qing scholars and officials. He had opportunities for scholarly exchange with many famous men of letters, such as Minister of War Lương Thi Chinh, Minister of Works Quy Hữu Quang, and many Confucian officials of the time.
In particular, at the Hồng Lô Hall, he met the Korean embassy led by Hong Gye-hui. The two sides exchanged poems, writings, and scholarship in a lively manner. Lê Quý Đôn introduced to them works he had compiled, such as Thánh mô hiền phạm lục, Quần thư khảo biện, and Tiêu Tương bách vịnh. His broad knowledge, talent in responding, and ability to compose poetry and prose in classical Chinese greatly impressed the Korean scholars and earned him much praise. The mission not only helped strengthen diplomatic relations between Đại Việt and the Qing dynasty but also elevated the scholarly standing of Vietnamese intellectuals in East Asia.
After returning from the mission to the Qing dynasty in 1762, Lê Quý Đôn was promoted to Thừa chỉ of the Hanlin Academy, then held the position of Scholar of the Secretariat, responsible for reviewing and determining books in the court. This office specialized in preserving, editing, and compiling court texts and gathered many famous scholars such as Ngô Thì Sĩ. With his broad learning, he quickly became a key figure in the work of editing and revising the national histories.
In 1763, he completed Bắc sứ thông lục, which recorded in detail his mission to the Qing dynasty, including geography, customs, culture, politics, and scholarly exchanges with Chinese and Korean intellectuals. More than a diplomatic travel record, the work also reflects the author’s broad outlook toward the contemporary world.
During the roughly ten years from 1763 to 1772, Lê Quý Đôn was repeatedly assigned to preside over or participate in the Hội examinations, directly selecting talented men for the country. As an examiner, he was known for being strict, fair, and always valuing practical learning. He believed that selecting talented people was the foundation for strengthening the country, because “talented people are the vital energy of the nation.”
Proposals for Administrative Reform
Lê Quý Đôn was not only a scholar but also an official who always cared about reforming the state apparatus. In 1764, facing the reality that many officials abused power, engaged in corruption, and disregarded the law, he submitted a memorial proposing that the court establish a strict legal system in order to restore discipline. Although this recommendation was not accepted by Lord Trịnh, it shows his progressive political thought and sense of responsibility toward the fate of the nation.
Also in that year, he was appointed Đốc đồng of Kinh Bắc, and later transferred to hold the position of Administrative Councillor of Hải Dương. However, seeing that court affairs were increasingly full of problems, and also suffering the pain of losing relatives, he submitted a memorial asking to resign and return to his native place. In his self-explanatory memorial, Lê Quý Đôn cited many reasons, but at a deeper level it reflected his discouragement at the decline of the governing apparatus.
During his time at home, he devoted himself to reading, research, and the compilation of many important works. This is considered one of the most productive periods in his scholarly career.
Return to the Court and Participation in Military Affairs
After Lord Trịnh Doanh passed away, Trịnh Sâm came to power, and at the recommendation of many high officials, especially Nguyễn Bá Lân, Lê Quý Đôn was summoned back to the capital in 1767. He held the position of Thị thư, participated in editing the national histories, and concurrently served as Director of the Quốc Tử Giám, in charge of education and the training of talented men.
In the same year, he was appointed Military Affairs Adviser and followed the army to suppress the uprising of Lê Duy Mật in Thanh Hóa. Although he did not directly command combat, he handled strategic advising, logistics, and military coordination, making important contributions to stabilizing the frontier region.
In 1768, he completed Toàn Việt thi lục, a large-scale anthology recording poetry from earlier dynasties, thereby helping preserve many precious literary works. One year later, he submitted a plan for land reclamation and the establishment of military-agricultural settlements in Thanh Hóa in order to develop the economy, increase revenue for the court, and stabilize the people’s livelihood.
Implementing Many Economic and Administrative Reforms
At the beginning of the 1770s, Lê Quý Đôn’s prestige grew increasingly high. In 1770, he was promoted to Right Vice Minister of the Ministry of Revenue, then Left Vice Minister of the Ministry of Personnel, directly participating in the management of court finance and personnel.
During his inspection of Thanh Hóa, he discovered many problems in the taxation system and therefore proposed the exemption or reduction of outstanding taxes on local products, aquatic products, and poll taxes for the people. These proposals were accepted and implemented by Lord Trịnh, helping ease the burden on the population.
When serving in the Ministry of Personnel, Lê Quý Đôn continued to present four major directions for reform:
Reorganizing the system of selecting, appointing, and using officials.
Rectifying the responsibilities of the official corps.
Revising tax policies in order to increase the effectiveness of financial management.
Reviving customs and educating the people.
These proposals show his comprehensive administrative thought, in which the building of an effective bureaucratic apparatus had to be connected with the improvement of social morality and the people’s livelihood.
In 1772, he was sent to Lạng Sơn to investigate the harassment and abuses of officials and the living conditions of frontier residents. The results of this survey were again used by him as a basis for proposing many administrative reforms.
Serving as Bồi tụng and the Peak of His Writings
In 1773, after a prolonged drought, Lê Quý Đôn submitted to Lord Trịnh a memorial consisting of five important points, emphasizing that in order for the realm to be at peace, the ruler must first govern by virtue, reduce taxes, and care for the people’s livelihood, rather than relying only on prayers or punishments.
Recognizing his ability, Lord Trịnh Sâm appointed him Bồi tụng, equivalent to Deputy Prime Minister, concurrently placed him in charge of the Hữu Hùng unit, and granted him the title Marquis of Dĩnh Thành. This was the peak period of Lê Quý Đôn’s political career.
Also in that year, he completed Vân đài loại ngữ, the first encyclopedic work of Vietnam. The work gathered and systematized knowledge in many fields, including philosophy, history, geography, astronomy, literature, agriculture, medicine, customs, and economics, reflecting the rare encyclopedic mind of its author.
Service in Thuận Hóa and the Compilation of Phủ biên tạp lục
In 1774, when Lord Trịnh Sâm personally led a campaign against Thuận Hóa, Lê Quý Đôn was assigned to serve as Acting Administrator of Thăng Long, managing affairs in the capital.
In 1775, after the Trịnh army captured Thuận Hóa, he was appointed Deputy Administrator and Military Councillor, working together with Bùi Thế Đạt to organize the governing apparatus in the newly occupied territory. During his work there, he conducted a comprehensive survey of the geography, population, economy, administration, military situation, and history of Thuận Hóa and Quảng Nam.
From the results of this field research, he compiled Phủ biên tạp lục, a geographical work of special value, reflecting quite fully the economic and social conditions and the sovereignty of Đại Việt in Thuận Hóa, Quảng Nam, as well as the Hoàng Sa and Trường Sa areas in the eighteenth century. It is considered one of the most important historical sources on Central Vietnam during the Lê-Trịnh period.
Legacy
Lê Quý Đôn left behind a vast scholarly legacy, regarded as one of the greatest achievements of Vietnamese scholarship in the medieval period. With a rich body of writings spanning many fields such as classical studies, history, geography, culture, literature, philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, and bibliography, he has been honored by later generations as a representative polymath of the eighteenth century. Although some works have been lost over time, the surviving books remain precious sources for the study of Vietnamese history, culture, society, and geography.
Lê Quý Đôn’s legacy may be divided into several groups. In the fields of classical studies and philosophy, he compiled works such as Dịch kinh phu thuyết, Thư kinh diễn nghĩa, Xuân thu lược luận, and Tứ thư ước giải, contributing to the annotation and dissemination of Confucian thought. He also left works on astronomy, numerology, and mathematics such as Thái Ất dị giản lục and Toán pháp đề uẩn, reflecting a breadth of knowledge that extended beyond the Confucian classics.
In the field of textual research and encyclopedic studies, Vân Đài loại ngữ is considered his most representative work. It was the first encyclopedia of Vietnam, gathering and systematizing knowledge on many aspects such as astronomy, geography, history, politics, rites, literature, agriculture, medicine, and customs. Together with Quần thư khảo biện and Thánh mô hiền phạm lục, these works demonstrate careful research, an empirical spirit, and a method of synthesizing knowledge that was rare in the scholarly world of the time.
In history and geography, Lê Quý Đôn left many works of lasting value, such as Đại Việt thông sử, Phủ biên tạp lục, Kiến văn tiểu lục, Bắc sứ thông lục, and he also participated in compiling Đại Việt sử ký tục biên. In particular, Phủ biên tạp lục is an important source that comprehensively reflects the economic, social, administrative, and daily life conditions of Đàng Trong in the eighteenth century, while Kiến văn tiểu lục records many valuable materials on Vietnamese history, culture, geography, customs, and famous figures.
In literature, he made great contributions to preserving the nation’s literary heritage through collections such as Toàn Việt thi lục and Hoàng Việt văn hải, while also leaving many of his own writings in Quế Đường thi tập, Quế Đường văn tập, and Liên châu thi tập. These works not only reflect Lê Quý Đôn’s literary talent but also help preserve many works by generations of Vietnamese poets.
His works remain especially valuable historical, geographical, and textual sources for the study of medieval Vietnamese history, culture, and society. With such great contributions, Lê Quý Đôn is regarded as one of the most erudite scholars in the history of the nation, leaving a lasting mark on Vietnam’s treasury of knowledge and culture.
Death
In his final years, Lê Quý Đôn had to witness the increasing decline of the Lê-Trịnh government, divisions within the lord’s residence, the disorderly rise of arrogant soldiers, chaos in officialdom, and the hardship and instability faced by people in many places. In this turbulent context, his health gradually deteriorated. Lê Quý Đôn asked to leave the capital and return to his maternal native village of Nguyễn Xá, now in Hà Nam province, to recover from illness. Although his family cared for him devotedly, his illness did not improve. On the 14th day of the 4th lunar month of the Giáp Thìn year, the 45th year of Cảnh Hưng, corresponding to June 11, 1784, he passed away in his native place at the age of fifty-eight.
The death of Lê Quý Đôn caused great grief among the court and the scholar-officials of the time. Recognizing his great contributions to the country in the fields of politics, education, diplomacy, and scholarship, Lord Trịnh Khải requested King Lê Hiển Tông to suspend court audiences for three days in mourning. The court appointed the scholar Bùi Huy Bích to preside over the funeral, and posthumously granted Lê Quý Đôn the position of Minister of Works in recognition of his services.
Under King Lê Chiêu Thống, Lê Quý Đôn’s contributions continued to be honored by the court when he was further granted the title Duke of Dĩnh. This posthumous honor expressed the court’s high evaluation of a great minister who had devoted his entire life to serving the country.
Although he passed away when the country was entering a period of great upheaval, Lê Quý Đôn left a deep mark on national history. He was not only a diligent high-ranking official but also an outstanding scholar with a vast body of writings, contributing to the preservation and development of the knowledge of Đại Việt. His scholarly and intellectual legacy continued to be inherited, studied, and honored by later generations, making the name Lê Quý Đôn a representative symbol of Vietnam’s tradition of learning and scholarship in the feudal period.
Family
His father was Lê Trọng Thứ, originally named Lê Phú Thứ, who passed the doctoral examination in the Giáp Thìn year, 1724, the second year of the Bảo Thái reign, and once held the position of Minister of Justice, being granted the title Marquis of Nghĩa Phái.
His mother was Trương Thị Ích, daughter of Trương Minh Lượng, a Doctor who once held many important positions in the court.
After passing as Giải nguyên in 1743, Lê Quý Đôn married Lê Thị Trang, the seventh daughter of Lê Hữu Kiều, who passed the doctoral examination in the Mậu Tuất year, 1718. She was a virtuous woman who, together with her husband, cared for the family during the early years of his career. However, she died of illness in 1761 before reaching the age of thirty, leaving Lê Quý Đôn with great grief and six young children.
Regarding his children, Lê Quý Đôn had four sons: Lê Quý Kiệt, Lê Quý Châu, Lê Quý Tá, and Lê Quý Nghị. Among them, Lê Quý Kiệt is the best known because he once sat for the Hội examination in 1775 but became involved in the case of exchanging examination papers with Đinh Thì Trung. The incident caused Lê Quý Kiệt to be punished, while Lê Quý Đôn, though not convicted, also suffered considerable damage to his reputation and political career in his final years.
Assessment and Evaluation
Lê Quý Đôn was one of the most outstanding scholars and representative polymaths in the history of medieval Vietnam. His life was closely connected with service to the court, while he also devoted himself fully to research, compilation, and the dissemination of knowledge. Although he lived in the politically and socially turbulent final period of the Revival Lê dynasty, he maintained a rigorous scholarly spirit and left behind a vast body of writings covering many fields, including history, geography, literature, philosophy, classical studies, bibliography, agriculture, mathematics, and astronomy.
Later generations have regarded Lê Quý Đôn as an all-round polymath, a historian, geographer, cultural figure, and great educator of the nation. The scholar Dương Quảng Hàm once commented that Lê Quý Đôn was “truly a polymath of the late Lê period,” because of his vast body of writings and rare breadth of knowledge. His works not only reflect the intellectual stature of an exceptional individual but also contributed to preserving, systematizing, and developing the scholarly heritage of the nation.
After nearly three centuries, the name and career of Lê Quý Đôn have retained their value. He is regarded as a symbol of studiousness, self-learning, tireless scholarly labor, and the responsibility of intellectuals toward the country. The legacy he left behind has become an important part of Vietnam’s cultural and scholarly treasury, and continues to serve as a precious foundation for later generations of scholars in studying and preserving national history and culture.

Origines
