Lê Ngân (? – 1437)

Lê Ngân (? – 1437)

Chiến công trong chiến dịch giải phóng Nghệ An

Sau thắng lợi này, quân Lam Sơn thừa thắng tiến sát thành Nghệ An, buộc quân Minh phải co cụm cố thủ, mở đầu quá trình giải phóng toàn bộ vùng Nghệ An.

Vây hãm và chiếm thành Nghệ An

Năm 1426, khi Lê Lợi quyết định đưa đại quân tiến ra Bắc nhằm giải phóng đồng bằng Bắc Bộ, ông giao cho Lê Ngân cùng các tướng Lê Văn An, Lê Bôi, Lê Điền, Lê Lĩnh, Lê Văn Linh và Lê Quốc Hưng ở lại tiếp tục bao vây thành Nghệ An.

Đầu năm 1427, sau thời gian kiên trì công phá, Lê Ngân chỉ huy quân Lam Sơn đánh chiếm thành Nghệ An, bắt sống viên chỉ huy quân Minh Thái Phúc.

Background

Lê Ngân (? – 1437) was one of the representative founding meritorious officials of the Early Lê dynasty, and also a general who made many important contributions to the Lam Sơn uprising against Ming domination in the early fifteenth century. He belonged to the first generation of generals who followed Lê Lợi from the very beginning of the uprising and always stood beside his lord throughout the struggle to regain national independence.

Lê Ngân was from Đàm Di commune, in the Lam Sơn region, now in Thọ Xuân district, Thanh Hóa province. This was the land where the Lam Sơn uprising originated, a place that produced many famous generals, meritorious officials, and outstanding figures of the Early Lê dynasty. The historical environment and patriotic tradition of this land helped nurture Lê Ngân’s fighting spirit and loyalty. During the most difficult stages of the uprising, from the time the insurgents were pursued by the Ming army in the Chí Linh mountains and suffered from food shortages, to the major campaigns in Nghệ An, Thuận Hóa, and Đông Đô, he was always one of the key generals who helped preserve the forces and bring about the final victory.

With his great contributions to the restoration of Đại Việt’s independence, Lê Ngân was ranked among the founding meritorious officials of the Early Lê dynasty. His name is associated with many brilliant military achievements in the Lam Sơn uprising, and historians have assessed him as one of the generals who made many contributions to the cause of building and defending the country under the Early Lê dynasty.

Career

Following Lê Lợi in Raising the Banner of the Lam Sơn Uprising

Lê Ngân was one of the generals who joined the Lam Sơn uprising from its earliest days, when Lê Lợi raised the banner of revolt in the spring of the Mậu Tuất year, 1418. In the context of the insurgent army still being weak, small in number, and constantly pursued by the Ming army, he soon proved his loyalty and military talent. Throughout nearly ten years of resistance against the Ming army, Lê Ngân was always present in major campaigns, achieved many military merits, and became one of the key generals of the Lam Sơn insurgent army.

Military Achievements in the Early Years of the Uprising

Immediately after the uprising broke out, the Ming army quickly mobilized a large force to destroy the insurgents. In the first lunar month of 1418, the eunuch Mã Kỳ commanded Ming troops to attack the Lam Sơn base. Under pressure from the enemy, Lê Lợi proactively withdrew his troops to the Lạc Thủy region to set up an ambush.

On the 13th day of the first lunar month, when the Ming army entered the ambush site, Lê Ngân, together with the generals Lê Thạch, Đinh Bồ, and Lê Lý, served as the vanguard and suddenly charged into the enemy formation. The insurgent army won a major victory, killing about three thousand Ming troops and seizing many weapons, provisions, and military supplies. This was one of the first victories of the uprising, helping strengthen the fighting spirit of the insurgents during an extremely difficult period.

In the following years, Lê Ngân continued to share hardships with Lê Lợi during the most dangerous moments of the uprising, from the time the insurgents had to withdraw to Chí Linh Mountain and endure prolonged food shortages, to the time they were besieged by both the Ming and Ai Lao forces. It was the steadfastness and endurance of generals such as Lê Ngân that helped the insurgent army preserve its forces and wait for the opportunity to counterattack.

Military Achievements in the Campaign to Liberate Nghệ An

The year 1424 marked an important turning point in the Lam Sơn uprising, when Lê Lợi decided to change strategy and lead his army into Nghệ An to build a new base.

In this campaign, Lê Ngân was one of the vanguard generals who directly took part in the battle of Bồ Ải, also known as Khả Lưu. When the Ming army commanded by Trần Trí and Sơn Thọ came to block the advance, Lê Lợi arranged an ambush, while Lê Ngân, together with the generals Lê Sát, Lê Lễ, Phạm Vấn, Lê Nhân Chú, Lê Khôi, and many others, simultaneously rushed forward to break the enemy formation.

The attack was fierce, and the Ming army quickly collapsed. The insurgents captured Admiral Chu Kiệt alive, killed Commander Hoàng Thành, destroyed and captured thousands of enemy troops, and seized a large number of warships, weapons, and military supplies. After this victory, the Lam Sơn army took advantage of the momentum and advanced close to Nghệ An Citadel, forcing the Ming troops to withdraw and hold out inside their fortifications. This opened the process of liberating the whole Nghệ An region.

Expanding the Liberated Area in Tân Bình and Thuận Hóa

After controlling most of Nghệ An, Lê Lợi continued to implement the plan to liberate Tân Bình and Thuận Hóa in order to cut off the Ming defensive system in the South.

In 1425, when the force commanded by Trần Nguyên Hãn and Lê Nỗ encountered fierce resistance from the Ming army and requested reinforcements, Lê Ngân was assigned to command a naval force of about seventy warships, together with the generals Lê Bôi and Lê Văn An, crossing the sea to provide support.

After joining forces, Lê Ngân and the other generals quickly launched attacks and liberated most of Tân Bình and Thuận Hóa. The local people supported the insurgent army, many places voluntarily submitted, while the Ming troops were forced to withdraw into fortified citadels. This victory helped the Lam Sơn insurgents greatly expand their area of control and create a position from which the Ming army could be surrounded from many directions.

Besieging and Capturing Nghệ An Citadel

In 1426, when Lê Lợi decided to lead the main army northward to liberate the Red River Delta, he assigned Lê Ngân, together with the generals Lê Văn An, Lê Bôi, Lê Điền, Lê Lĩnh, Lê Văn Linh, and Lê Quốc Hưng, to remain behind and continue besieging Nghệ An Citadel.

In early 1427, after a long period of persistent assault, Lê Ngân commanded the Lam Sơn army in capturing Nghệ An Citadel and took the Ming commander Thái Phúc alive. The capture of Nghệ An Citadel not only eliminated the Ming army’s most important military base in Central Vietnam but also secured a firm rear base for the insurgents before they entered the decisive campaign at Đông Quan.

Founding Meritorious Official and High Minister of the Early Lê Dynasty

After defeating the Ming army and restoring independence, in 1428 Lê Lợi ascended the throne as emperor and established the Early Lê dynasty. For his great services in the resistance war, Lê Ngân was granted the title of Meritorious Official for Loyal Support, Assisting Governance, and Joint Counsel, held the office of Nhập nội Tư mã, and participated in court affairs.

In 1429, during the reward ceremony for founding meritorious officials, he was granted the title Á Thượng hầu. This was a special title, granted only to Lê Ngân within the system of rewards for meritorious officials, reflecting the court’s special recognition of his contributions.

In the same year, he was one of seven high ministers entrusted with carrying the golden investiture documents to install Lê Tư Tề as National King and Lê Nguyên Long, later Lê Thái Tông, as Crown Prince. His participation in one of the most important political ceremonies of the court shows that he was one of the great ministers especially trusted by Lê Thái Tổ.

Regent under Lê Thái Tông

After Lê Thái Tổ passed away in 1433, Lê Thái Tông ascended the throne at only eleven years old. In the early stage of the new reign, Lê Ngân continued to hold many important offices, such as Tư khấu and Chief Military Commander of the Northern Route, and together with other high ministers such as Lê Sát, he participated in governing the court.

He also took part in recruiting soldiers, strengthening the army, and handling many important affairs of the court. However, historical records also note that Lê Ngân was upright in character but sometimes rather rigid and narrow-minded. In a land dispute with a fellow villager named Phạm Mấn, he allowed personal affairs to affect court business, causing later historians to make not entirely positive comments about his character.

In addition, Lê Ngân repeatedly took part in advising King Lê Thái Tông on how to handle high ministers. When the king intended to punish Lê Sát harshly, it was Lê Ngân and Bùi Cầm Hổ who advised the king to preserve the dignity of a founding meritorious official, showing a spirit of loyalty to righteousness and caution in dealing with officials of the previous reign.

Being Trusted and Reaching the Peak of Power

In 1437, after Lê Sát was dismissed from office, Lê Ngân continued to be trusted by Lê Thái Tông. He was promoted to the offices of Nhập nội Đại đô đốc, Quy Hóa Trấn Phiêu kỵ Thượng tướng quân, Đặc tiến Khai phủ Nghi đồng Tam ty, and Thượng trụ quốc, while also being granted the title Quốc Huyện Thượng hầu.

In the same year, his daughter Lê Nhật Lệ was appointed Huệ phi, becoming one of the favored consorts of King Lê Thái Tông. This further shows Lê Ngân’s political position and prestige in the court during the final years of his life.

From a loyal follower who joined Lê Lợi in raising the banner of revolt at Lam Sơn to one of the founding meritorious officials and regent ministers of the Early Lê dynasty, Lê Ngân’s career clearly reflects the image of a general with many military achievements, loyal to the court, and important in both the process of regaining independence and building the Đại Việt state after victory.

Death and Remembrance

In the eleventh lunar month of the fourth year of Thiệu Bình, 1437, someone accused him of setting up an altar to Guanyin in his private residence in order to pray that his daughter, Huệ phi Lê Nhật Lệ, would be favored by King Lê Thái Tông. The king ordered the eunuch Đỗ Khuyển and the imperial guards to search his residence, where they found a Buddhist statue, along with much gold, silver, silk, and brocade. Although Buddhist worship was a common belief in society at the time, the matter was interpreted as an act of ritual prayer for private purposes, in the context of the court carrying out a purge of forces that had once played regent roles.

Summoned to court to explain himself, Lê Ngân affirmed that the altar had only been set up to repair an old place of worship according to the words of a fortune-teller, in order to pray for peace for his family, and that he had no intention of seeking power. He also argued that the accusations came from resentment among former concubines and household servants. At the same time, recognizing his old age and weakness and facing an unfavorable situation, he asked to resign and return to his native place to rest. However, the court continued the investigation, arrested and interrogated his household servants, and eventually forced him to commit suicide at his private residence. All his property was confiscated, and his daughter Huệ phi Lê Nhật Lệ was demoted to the rank of Tư dung.

The death of Lê Ngân reflects the fierce power struggles in the early years of the Early Lê dynasty, when King Lê Thái Tông gradually took back power from the group of founding high ministers who had served as regents. Although his ending was incomplete, his contributions to the Lam Sơn uprising and the founding of the Lê dynasty were not denied by history.

After Lê Ngân passed away, his son Lê Nho Tông continued to be employed by the court. In 1448, under the reign of King Lê Nhân Tông, Lê Nho Tông was appointed Đại đội trưởng of the Bảo Ứng army. In 1453, on the occasion of a general amnesty, the king granted 100 mẫu of official fields to the descendants of Lê Ngân and to the families of several other founding meritorious officials such as Lê Sát, Lê Khả, Lê Khiêm, and Trịnh Khắc Phục, showing recognition of the contributions of these meritorious families.

In particular, in 1484, King Lê Thánh Tông posthumously granted Lê Ngân the office of Grand Mentor and the title Duke of Hoằng Quốc, officially restoring his honor and affirming his position among the founding meritorious officials of the Lê dynasty. This posthumous honor shows that the later Lê court had a more objective view of the political incidents under Lê Thái Tông and duly recognized Lê Ngân’s contributions to the Lam Sơn uprising and the early years of building the dynasty.

Today, although not many separate worship sites dedicated to Lê Ngân remain, his name is still preserved in historical records and has been given to many streets in localities such as Thanh Hóa, Đà Nẵng, and Ho Chi Minh City, helping commemorate a meritorious official who made many contributions to the cause of winning independence and building the Early Lê dynasty.

Assessment and Evaluation

Lê Ngân was one of the representative meritorious officials of the Lam Sơn uprising and a figure who made many important contributions to the formation and consolidation of the Early Lê dynasty. Joining the insurgent army from its earliest difficult days, he always stood shoulder to shoulder with Lê Lợi during the most dangerous moments of the resistance war against the Ming army. From the battles at Lạc Thủy, Bồ Ải, and Khả Lưu to the campaign to liberate Nghệ An and the northern advance that ended with victory at Xương Giang, Lê Ngân directly commanded troops in battle, helping create decisive turning points that brought the Lam Sơn uprising to complete victory.

After the Lê dynasty was established, he was granted many important offices, participated in court affairs, helped Lê Thái Tổ build the governing apparatus together with other meritorious officials, and later served as regent under King Lê Thái Tông. The fact that he was repeatedly entrusted with important court duties shows his organizational ability, political courage, and prestige among the founding meritorious officials.

However, Lê Ngân’s life also clearly reflects the complex political upheavals of the early Early Lê dynasty. His being forced to commit suicide in 1437 marked the beginning of King Lê Thái Tông’s effort to reclaim power from the regent ministers and purge influential forces within the court. This event was not only Lê Ngân’s personal tragedy but also the common fate of many founding meritorious officials who had rendered great service but were later drawn into the vortex of power struggles. Even so, the fact that King Lê Thánh Tông later posthumously granted him the title Duke of Hoằng Quốc affirmed that the later Lê court still highly valued his contributions to the country.

Overall, Lê Ngân represents the founding military generals of the Lê dynasty: loyal, courageous, rich in military talent, and devoted to the cause of national restoration. His military achievements in the Lam Sơn uprising and his role in the early years of building the dynasty made important contributions to regaining independence and laying the foundations for one of the most prosperous dynasties in Vietnamese history.

Origines
