Name and geographical location
Within the Lien Khe heritage complex, one cannot miss Mai Dong Pagoda—a memorial work to the Bach Dang victory (1288) against the Mongol Yuan Empire. Dong Quan Pagoda, formally named Le Son Tu, is located in Lien Khe Commune, Thuy Nguyen District, Hai Phong City. The Le Son Pagoda site, in Mai Dong cultural village, lies on the slope of the Yen Ngua mountain range; the grounds descend along the hillside at about 13 degrees.
History and figures
Mai Dong Pagoda is not only a village pagoda like many traditional Vietnamese village pagodas, but also a memorial to the Bach Dang victory of 1288 in the glorious resistance against the Mongol Yuan Empire. Tradition relates that Mai Dong Pagoda was built on land that once served as a forward military supply depot of the Tran army. Today the pagoda lies amid busy hamlets and villages; in former times, when the cluster of supply depots chose this spot—surrounded on all sides by layered hills and close to a landing—it ensured secrecy and safety while remaining convenient for transport.
At its foundation, Mai Dong Pagoda was renowned as a major son mon (monastic center) of the Truc Lam Yen Tu Zen school initiated by Buddhist King Tran Nhan Tong. Traces from ancient times remain clearly visible here, such as the stupas of monks who practiced at the pagoda—evidence of its early origin and many generations of abbots. A stone pillar (Thach dai tru) created in the reign of Le Hy Tong, year Chinh Hoa 1 (1680), also shows the transition from a Truc Lam Zen pagoda to the Le–Mac period (16th–17th centuries).
Architecture and landscape
Facing south, the pagoda formerly preserved four monk stupas among more than twenty in total—affirming that Mai Dong Pagoda long received care from generations of clergy and devotees. The layout follows the familiar Dinh plan with three front bays (forehall) and three rear bays (sanctum). The rear sanctum is not directly attached to the back of the forehall but is a longitudinal “pestle-handle” block set apart by a narrow courtyard known as the san long. The forehall stands on four timber frame units, each with four rows of columns (two main, two secondary), using the simple “continuous beam with struts” system.
The rear sanctum is a three-bay, three-roof longitudinal house. The side and front roofs are tiled with age-mossed dragon-scale tiles beneath green canopies; the front is open, while the sides and gable slopes are enclosed by brick walls. Low walls around the san long separate it from the outside, keeping ritual continuity while seeming to detach the interior from the secular world. The rear block is formed by three ironwood frame units and sloped gable walls, each frame with four column rows in the “stacked sloping-brace, triple-corbel” style; longitudinal ties are chiefly the upper tie-beams linking the main columns.
Artifacts
Time and harsh climate have greatly altered and damaged the architecture of Mai Dong Pagoda; yet surviving traces have become sacred cultural treasures of the local community. Within the weathered, moss-covered halls lies a trove of national art awaiting preservation and display.
The pagoda still preserves many valuable Buddhist statues, such as the Three Buddhas (Tam The), the Holy Monk, Duc Ong, Bodhisattvas, Shakyamuni’s Birth, Nam Tao and Bac Dau, mostly dating to the 19th century.
Mai Dong Pagoda also preserves several stone steles, a Thach thien dai (stone heavenly platform), and classical manuscripts from the 17th–18th centuries. The Thach thien dai pillar in the courtyard is a square-section stone column (height 1.65 m, width 22 cm). Its cap forms a round lotus bud above a square “cup” (upper side 38 cm, lower side 30 cm, height 16 cm). The top bears finely carved lotus petals, three per side. The upper square “cup” shows paired dragon-and-phoenix reliefs on front and back, and stylized lotus petals on the sides. The lower square “cup” has a beast playing with a paw on the front, three fish meeting heads-together like a three-petaled flower on the back, and full-bloom lotus on the sides. Borders carry vine-like chrysanthemum, dragon, and phoenix motifs. The shaft bears sun-petal-shaped panels with incised Han characters.
Through the system of sites commemorating the Bach Dang victory of 1288 in Lien Khe Commune, Thuy Nguyen District, vivid and heroic images of the Trần-era struggle and triumph more than 700 years ago are revealed.
Events and festivals
Annual worship days: 9/1; 15/3; 20/8; 15/9 (lunar calendar). On 15/3, a communal worship is held at the communal hall; there are also first-ploughing and harvest rituals (without fixed dates). “Taboos on speaking the tutelary deity’s name depend on each person.”
Heritage ranking
Together with Thu Khe Temple and Thiem Khe Pagoda, Mai Dong Pagoda belongs to the system of monuments related to the Bach Dang victory of 1288. This complex was recognized as a National-Level Historical and Artistic Monument in 1996.
