Năm 1787, Ngô Văn Sở cùng Vũ Văn Nhậm tiêu diệt Nguyễn Hữu Chỉnh và chiếm Thăng Long.

Cuối năm 1788, vua Lê Chiêu Thống dẫn quân Thanh do Tôn Sĩ Nghị chỉ huy sang xâm lược.

Do Cảnh Thịnh còn nhỏ tuổi, thực quyền dần rơi vào tay Thái sư Bùi Đắc Tuyên.

Grand Marshal Ngo Van So (?–1795)

Background

Ngo Van So (吳文楚) was born and raised in Binh Thanh village, Tuy Phuoc district, Binh Dinh province (now part of Tay Son district, Binh Dinh province) [citation needed].

His ancestors originally came from Trao Nha village, Thien Loc district (now Can Loc, Ha Tinh), and migrated to the Tay Son region at an unclear time. His grandfather, Ngo Manh, once held the post of Do thong under Truong Phuc Loan, guarding the Linh Giang and Truong Duc areas. His father, Ngo Van Dien, served as Kinh xa Ve uy under the Le–Trinh regime and was stationed in Quang Nam. Some sources state that his mother was named Nguyen Thi My, though her native place has not been clearly identified.

Ngo Van Dien had four sons: Ngo Van So, Ngo Van Tri, Ngo Van Ngu, and Ngo Van Dan. Descendants of Ngo Van Ngu currently reside in Nhon Binh ward (Quy Nhon); Ngo Van So and Ngo Van Ngu are worshiped at the old house where they once lived. The descendants of the other three brothers left their homeland before the collapse of the Tay Son regime in 1801 (according to the genealogy of the Ngo clan in Vietnam).

Because of his upright character, Ngo Manh refused to submit to Truong Phuc Loan and was falsely accused of colluding with the Trinh lord. He was stripped of military authority, his property was confiscated, and he was sentenced to exile. He managed to escape, bringing with him his grandson Ngo Van So, changing their names to Dang Hai Sieu and Dang Son Dieu, and fled south to hide in the Tay Son region. Along the way, Ngo Manh fell ill; the two were sheltered by Lord Bui in Xuan Hoa hamlet. When bandits attacked the Bui household at night, Ngo Manh drove them off and afterward revealed his true identity. From then on, he became a martial arts instructor to Bui Thi Xuan; Ngo Van So also studied there, becoming her fellow disciple.

After three years of refuge at the Bui estate, Ngo Manh died of sudden illness. Ngo Van So left Xuan Hoa and settled in Binh Thanh village, Tuy Vien district (Tuy Phuoc).

Participation in the Tay Son Uprising

From the very beginning of the Tay Son uprising in 1771, led by the three brothers Nguyen Nhac, Nguyen Hue, and Nguyen Lu, Ngo Van So joined their ranks and quickly became one of the key commanders.

In 1773, Ngo Van So was appointed Chinh Nam Dai tuong quan and, together with Le Van Loc and Le Van Hung, led campaigns against the three prefectures of Phu Yen, Dien Khanh, and Binh Thuan. With the support of local mountain forces in the western regions, Tay Son troops advanced smoothly, gained popular support, and rapidly captured the fortresses. The Nguyen general Nguyen Van Hien was killed, and Nguyen Khoa Kien was captured. After the victory, Ngo Van So withdrew his forces and entrusted local defense to fellow generals.

In 1775, he continued to follow Nguyen Hue in defeating more than twenty thousand Nguyen troops commanded by Tong Phuc Hiep at Phu Yen. From this point on, Ngo Van So firmly held a high position in the Tay Son command structure. In 1778, when Nguyen Nhac proclaimed himself emperor, Ngo Van So was granted the title of Grand Marshal (Dai Tu ma). In major campaigns, especially the offensive into Thuan Hoa, he was often appointed Tham tan quan vu to share military authority with Nguyen Hue.

At the end of 1786, Bac Ha fell into turmoil due to famine and power struggles within the Trinh lord’s court. Recognizing the opportunity, Nguyen Hue advocated a northern campaign. After deliberation and encouragement from Nguyen Huu Chinh, Nguyen Nhac decided to send troops north. Nguyen Hue served as overall commander, with key generals clearly assigned roles, including Ngo Van So. Tay Son forces crossed the Gianh River and advanced into Bac Ha.

In 1787, Ngo Van So, together with Vu Van Nham, eliminated Nguyen Huu Chinh and occupied Thang Long. However, Vu Van Nham later abused his power, installed Le Duy Can as Regent, and lost the support of the Bac Ha scholar-officials. Ngo Van So secretly reported these actions to Nguyen Hue.

In early 1788, Nguyen Hue personally led a second northern expedition and swiftly eliminated Vu Van Nham. Ngo Van So was entrusted with overall military and civil authority, overseeing eleven provinces of Bac Ha together with senior civil and military officials in Thang Long. Before returning to Phu Xuan, Nguyen Hue instructed his generals to remain united, deliberate state affairs collectively, and avoid divisions between old and new factions.

At the end of 1788, King Le Chieu Thong led Qing troops under Sun Shiyi into an invasion. Ngo Van So advocated a policy of appeasement to buy time, but this was unsuccessful. Following the strategy of Ngo Thi Nham, he ordered a withdrawal to hold the Tam Diep–Bien Son line while urgently reporting to Phu Xuan.

Upon receiving the news, Nguyen Hue ascended the throne as Emperor, adopting the reign title Quang Trung, and immediately marched north. When the main army reached Tam Diep in early 1789, Ngo Van So presented himself to accept blame but was pardoned and continued to be entrusted with major responsibilities. In the counteroffensive campaign, he and Phan Van Lan commanded the vanguard, directly participating in the decisive battles of Ha Hoi and Ngoc Hoi.

After the great victory, Ngo Van So was ennobled as Ich Quoc cong and, together with Phan Van Lan, remained in Thang Long to manage military and administrative affairs. In 1790, he led a diplomatic mission to Yen Kinh to attend the birthday celebrations of the Qianlong Emperor and was subsequently appointed Naval Commander (Thuy su Do doc).

Under the Reign of Canh Thinh

In 1792, Emperor Quang Trung died suddenly, and his son Nguyen Quang Toan ascended the throne, taking the reign title Canh Thinh. Ngo Van So was recalled to Phu Xuan and became an important pillar of the court. With his support, Bui Dac Tuyen rose to prominence. King Canh Thinh appointed Ngo Van So as Dai Dong ly, ennobled him as Chan Quan cong, and entrusted him with both military and civil administration in Bac Ha.

As Canh Thinh was still young, real power gradually fell into the hands of Grand Preceptor Bui Dac Tuyen. The Tay Son court became increasingly chaotic. According to Western missionaries in Phu Xuan, Bui Dac Tuyen sought to manipulate the court, purge meritorious officials, and even plot to place his own son, Bui Dac Tru, on the throne.

In 1793, Nguyen Anh attacked Nguyen Nhac. Emperor Thai Duc appealed for aid from the Phu Xuan court. Canh Thinh dispatched Ngo Van So and Pham Cong Hung with 17,000 troops and 80 war elephants, forcing Nguyen Anh’s forces to withdraw. However, despite Ngo Van So’s remonstrations, Pham Cong Hung seized the treasury and disarmed Thai Duc’s troops. Nguyen Nhac, already gravely ill, heard that his son Nguyen Van Bao had lost his fief and died in anguish, vomiting blood. The court then demoted Nguyen Van Bao to the rank of Hieu cong and confiscated all lands of the senior line.

Although unable to prevent Pham Cong Hung from consolidating power, Ngo Van So sought to protect former officials of Thai Duc: those who requested retirement were allowed to return home, while those who submitted to Canh Thinh were reassigned far away. He then returned to Phu Xuan.

In 1794, the case of Le Van Hung occurred. Bui Dac Tuyen framed him by ordering Le Van Hung to attack Phu Yen. After his victorious return, Hung was accused of withdrawing troops without authorization and plotting rebellion. Despite earnest remonstrations from Ngo Van So and Tran Van Ky, King Canh Thinh ordered Le Van Hung executed, marking a severe decline of the Tay Son regime.

Death

In 1795, Bui Dac Tuyen summoned Vu Van Dung from Bac Ha back to Phu Xuan while transferring Ngo Van So to take his place. On the way, Vu Van Dung encountered Tran Van Ky, who was being exiled at Hoang Giang station. Tran Van Ky warned that Bui Dac Tuyen was abusing power and endangering the state, and that failure to eliminate him promptly would bring disastrous consequences.

Heeding this warning, Vu Van Dung immediately led troops back to Phu Xuan and secretly coordinated with Nguyen Van Huan and Pham Cong Hung to arrest Bui Dac Tuyen inside King Canh Thinh’s palace.

Believing Ngo Van So to be aligned with Tuyen’s faction, Vu Van Dung forged an edict summoning him from Thang Long to the capital. As soon as Ngo Van So arrived, he was imprisoned together with Bui Dac Tuyen and his son in iron cages and drowned in the Perfume River. This occurred in 1795, bringing to an end the life of a distinguished general closely associated with the Tay Son dynasty.

Worship

Today, Grand Marshal Ngo Van So is worshiped at the ancestral hall of the Ngo clan in Quy Nhon ward, Gia Lai province. In addition, Den Doi Ong in Lam Son ward, Bim Son, Thanh Hoa, is also a site dedicated to the worship of Grand Marshal Ngo Van So.

Dai Tu ma Ngo Van So (?–1795)

Origines

Ngo Van Dien eut quatre fils : Ngo Van So, Ngo Van Tri, Ngo Van Ngu et Ngo Van Dan.

Ngo Van So rapporta secretement ces faits a Nguyen Hue.

Assassinat

Ngo Van So,?–1795)
