Nguyễn Hữu Chỉnh (1741-1788)

Thông tin cơ bản

Thân thế

Nguyễn Hữu Chỉnh 阮有整 quê ở huyện Chân Phúc, phủ Đức Quang, trấn Nghệ An (nay thuộc xã Phúc Thọ, huyện Nghi Lộc, Nghệ An).

Nguyễn Hữu Chỉnh bị bắt do ngựa què.

Nguyen Huu Chinh (1741–1788)

Background

Nguyen Huu Chinh (阮有整) was a native of Chan Phuc District, Duc Quang Prefecture, Nghe An Tran (today Phuc Tho Commune, Nghi Loc District, Nghe An). He was born at a time when Dai Viet was divided into Dang Ngoai, ruled by the Le king and the Trinh lords, and Dang Trong, under the Nguyen lords; Nguyen Huu Chinh belonged to Dang Ngoai. His father was a wealthy merchant, which enabled him to receive an early education and cultivate wide social connections.

According to Hoang Le nhat thong chi, Nguyen Huu Chinh was handsome, intelligent, and well versed in Confucian learning and the classical canon. At the age of sixteen, he passed the Huong cong examination and was therefore commonly known as Cong Chinh; two years later, he passed the military examination at the Tam truong level. Thanks to his father’s status as a retainer of Quan Hiep Hoang Ngu Phuc, he was soon recommended and entered the service of this powerful official.

In Thang Long, Nguyen Huu Chinh lived a free-spirited life, maintaining broad social ties and often gathering with friends to compose poetry and drink wine. He was also renowned for his talent in vernacular poetry, said to have begun composing at a very young age, with many works circulating widely. Among them was Quach Lenh cong phu, expressing his admiration for Guo Ziyi of the Tang dynasty.

Political Career

In the year Nham Dan (1782), supporters of Trinh Sam’s eldest son, Trinh Tong, launched a coup, overthrowing Trinh Can and killing Quan Huy Hoang Dinh Bao. At that time, Nguyen Huu Chinh had a trusted subordinate named Hoang Viet Tuyen, a brave and resourceful man. Earlier, Chinh had recommended Tuyen to Quan Hiep, as a result of which Hoang Viet Tuyen was placed in command of a platoon under the Hau Kien Corps, stationed in Son Nam Tran.

After the coup and the killing of Hoang Dinh Bao, Hoang Viet Tuyen crossed the sea to Nghe An to report the news to Nguyen Huu Chinh. Fearing political repercussions, Nguyen Huu Chinh attempted to persuade the governor of Nghe An, Dao Trung Hau Vu Ta Dao—brother-in-law of Hoang Dinh Bao—to seize control of the tran, build an independent force, and ally with generals in Thuan Hoa in order to break away from the Le–Trinh court.

Vu Ta Dao, however, rejected this plan. He merely wished to leave Nghe An to avoid danger, but hesitated over where to go. In this situation, Nguyen Huu Chinh returned home and, together with Hoang Viet Tuyen, led his entire family south to join the Tay Son.

At that time, the Tay Son movement had destroyed the Nguyen lords, and Nguyen Nhac had proclaimed himself Thien vuong with the reign title Thai Duc. Although the Le–Trinh court was aware that Nguyen Huu Chinh had joined the Tay Son, it took no action against him. As Nguyen Nhac intended to advance on Thuan Hoa, he warmly welcomed Nguyen Huu Chinh and treated him as an honored guest. Nguyen Huu Chinh, however, sensed that Nguyen Nhac remained cautious and did not yet fully trust him, so he voluntarily left his wife and children behind as hostages to demonstrate his loyalty.

Moreover, Nguyen Huu Chinh proposed strategies for Nguyen Nhac to launch campaigns against Champa, Siam, and Bon Man. In these campaigns, he consistently volunteered to lead from the front, personally commanding troops at critical fronts and achieving significant victories. Through his dedication and military competence demonstrated in practice, Nguyen Nhac gradually placed full trust in him.

According to Hoang Le nhat thong chi, after Nguyen Huu Chinh left the court, the Le–Trinh government fell into a state of insecurity and repeatedly offered rewards to entice him to return, but without success.

At the beginning of 1786, Bac Ha was struck by a severe famine; rice prices soared and starvation claimed lives everywhere. Recognizing that the time was ripe, Nguyen Hue urged Nguyen Nhac to march north, but Nguyen Nhac remained hesitant.

In the fourth lunar month of 1786, Pham Ngo Cau, governor of Phu Xuan, sent Nguyen Phu Nhu south to summon Nguyen Huu Chinh back. Chinh not only refused but also gathered intelligence on the situation in Thuan Hoa. Seeing that Dang Ngoai forces were lax, he advised Nguyen Nhac to attack Phu Xuan. Nguyen Nhac agreed and entrusted Nguyen Hue with command of the combined naval and land forces, together with generals Nguyen Dinh Dac, Vu Van Nham, Nguyen Huu Chinh, and Nguyen Lu, advancing through Hai Van Pass straight into Thuan Hoa.

Nguyen Huu Chinh employed a stratagem to sow discord between Pham Ngo Cau and his deputy Hoang Dinh The. He forged a letter to persuade Hoang Dinh The to surrender but deliberately allowed Pham Ngo Cau to see it, causing Cau to suspect his subordinate. When Tay Son forces attacked the citadel, Cau did not send reinforcements; Hoang Dinh The was killed in battle. Pham Ngo Cau later surrendered but was also executed.

Seizing the momentum, Nguyen Huu Chinh urged Nguyen Hue to advance north under the banner of “supporting the Le and eliminating the Trinh.” He argued that Bac Ha was weak, with arrogant and indolent generals and popular resentment against the Trinh; acting at this moment would win widespread support. He further claimed that the Trinh house had exhausted its mandate and that this was a rare opportunity for great achievement.

Nguyen Hue initially hesitated because he lacked Nguyen Nhac’s authorization, but persuaded by Nguyen Huu Chinh’s analysis of the situation and the flexibility required of a commander, he decided to march north on his own initiative, claiming he had already received orders.

Nguyen Huu Chinh led troops to seize the Vi Hoang granaries and simultaneously dispatched forces to harass Nghe An and Thanh Hoa to amplify their presence. The governors of both regions abandoned their citadels and fled. On the sixth day of the sixth lunar month of 1786, Vi Hoang fell, and more than one million ho of grain fell into Tay Son hands. Nguyen Hue joined forces with Nguyen Huu Chinh and rapidly advanced toward Thang Long. Within a month, Trinh forces collapsed, and Trinh Tong committed suicide.

In the seventh lunar month of 1786, after eliminating the Trinh, Nguyen Hue entered the Van Tho Hall to pay homage to King Le Hien Tong, expressing submission to the Le court. The court was then in disarray, with most officials having fled. At Nguyen Huu Chinh’s suggestion, the king recalled the remaining senior officials to convene court sessions. Nguyen Hue requested a grand court ceremony, presenting household registers and troop rosters to affirm his role as supporter of the Le. After being granted titles, Nguyen Huu Chinh perceived that Nguyen Hue was not yet fully satisfied and discreetly proposed that the king marry Princess Ngoc Han to him. Nguyen Hue readily agreed.

On the seventeenth day of the seventh lunar month of 1786, King Le Hien Tong died. Nguyen Hue donned mourning attire, personally escorted the coffin to the riverbank, and then ordered Nguyen Huu Chinh and the eunuch Tran Van Ky to accompany it to Thanh Hoa.

Defeat and Death

After Tay Son forces withdrew, Bac Ha fell into chaos. Le Chieu Thong, fearing a power vacuum, called upon officials and local notables to raise troops to “protect” the capital, but many instead seized territory and fought one another. Taking advantage of the situation, former Trinh generals installed Trinh Bong as lord and forced the king to grant him the title An Do vuong.

At the urging of civil officials, Le Chieu Thong summoned Nguyen Huu Chinh to suppress the Trinh remnants. With the legitimacy of royal authority, Chinh recruited more than ten thousand troops, swiftly defeated opposing forces, and entered Thang Long. Trinh Bong fled, the lord’s palace was burned, and the Trinh family permanently lost power.

Nguyen Huu Chinh was granted high office and assumed full military authority in Bac Ha. He continued to suppress former Trinh generals, leaving no rivals within the country. As his power grew, he gradually overshadowed the Le king.

Upon learning of internal discord within the Tay Son leadership, Nguyen Huu Chinh conceived plans to oppose the Tay Son and build an independent power base. He occupied Nghe An, repaired the Hoanh Son fortifications, and took the Gianh River as the boundary with Thuan Hoa. This move was reported by Vu Van Nham to Nguyen Hue, thwarting Chinh’s plans.

Nguyen Hue immediately dispatched Ngo Van So and Phan Van Lan, in coordination with Vu Van Nham, to lead troops north. At the end of 1787, Tay Son forces attacked; Nguyen Huu Chinh, overconfident, was quickly defeated. At the battle of Thanh Quyet, due to lax defenses, all his warships and firearms were captured.

Bac Ha forces disintegrated. Nguyen Huu Chinh escorted Le Chieu Thong in flight but was relentlessly pursued. At Muc Son, his forces were ambushed from both sides and completely routed. Nguyen Huu Chinh was captured after his horse went lame.

He was taken back to Thang Long. Vu Van Nham accused him of disloyalty and ordered his execution at the city gate.

Works

Nguyen Huu Chinh was the author of the Nom poetry collection Cung Oan Thi, several Nom prose-poems such as Quach Tu Nghi Phu and Truong Luu Hau Phu, and the classical Chinese poetry collection Ngon An Thi Tap.

Nguyen Huu Chinh (1741–1788)

Origines et formation

Nguyen Huu Chinh (阮有整) était originaire du district de Chan Phuc, phu Duc Quang, tran Nghe An (aujourd’hui commune de Phuc Tho, district de Nghi Loc, province de Nghe An).

(Nguyen Huu Chinh,1741–1788)
