Background and Life
Lê Lăng came from the family of the meritorious official Lê Triện. Having himself rendered military service, Lê Lăng was entrusted with important responsibilities by the court from an early stage. He repeatedly accompanied the army on campaigns and achieved military distinction. Under the reign of Emperor Lê Nhân Tông, during the Thái Hòa era (1443–1453), Lê Lăng held the office of Nhập nội Thiếu úy and was permitted to participate in affairs of state, gradually becoming one of the military officials of considerable standing at court.
In 1459, when Prince Lạng Sơn Lê Nghi Dân killed Lê Nhân Tông and seized the throne, Lê Lăng was serving as Nhập nội Thiếu úy, Bình chương quân quốc trọng sự, and held the title Á Thượng hầu. Together with Thái phó Đinh Liệt, Nguyễn Xí, and Lê Niệm, he secretly discussed raising forces against Nghi Dân. They killed Nghi Dân’s close associates Phạm Đồn and Phan Ban, forced Nghi Dân to relinquish the throne, and then brought Lê Thánh Tông to the throne. This decisive event made Lê Lăng one of the meritorious officials who helped inaugurate the reign of Lê Thánh Tông.
In the first year of the Quang Thuận era (1460), in recognition of his role in supporting the emperor’s accession, Lê Lăng was additionally granted the rank of Thái bảo and received 300 mẫu of hereditary land. He was subsequently entrusted, together with Đinh Liệt, with commanding troops to suppress Man Cầm.
In the second year of Quang Thuận (1461), the court ordered Chánh chưởng Nguyễn Lỗi to bring silver as a reward and convey an imperial instruction to Lê Lăng that he should continue to conduct himself as before, and in particular should remain “incorruptible” and “impartial.” However, shortly afterward, the emperor also issued a rather severe rebuke concerning Lê Lăng’s character. He considered Lê Lăng excessively rigid, outwardly arrogant, and biased in his treatment of others: he would seek ways to suppress those he disliked while favoring those who complied with him. The emperor believed that this was precisely why many people were dissatisfied with him.
Lê Lăng was later promoted to Thái úy, becoming one of the most powerful senior officials at court. However, his position also became increasingly sensitive. In the eighth lunar month of the third year of Quang Thuận (1462), someone accused Lê Lăng and Đỗ Công Thích of secretly plotting rebellion, while also accusing Á hầu Lê Nhân Thuận of forming a faction in order to deceive the emperor. Lê Thánh Tông became enraged and ordered the execution of Lê Lăng and those implicated in the case. Their property was confiscated, and the accusations against them were publicly announced both inside and outside the court.
Behind the case lay a more complex political cause. Earlier, when the meritorious officials had acted against the faction of Nghi Dân, Lê Lăng had believed that Prince Cung Lê Khắc Xương, the foremost among the younger sons of Lê Thái Tông, could be installed as emperor. Nguyễn Xí, however, disagreed and, together with the other meritorious officials, brought Lê Thánh Tông to the throne.
Later, when Lê Thánh Tông learned of this, he gradually became suspicious of Lê Lăng and no longer trusted him. As a meritorious official who had participated in supporting the throne, who possessed a strong and uncompromising character, and who wielded considerable power, Lê Lăng became a figure of whom the emperor was wary. Historical sources further record the emperor as saying that Lê Lăng often appeared fearful in his presence, which only deepened the emperor’s suspicions.
After Lê Lăng was executed, Lê Thánh Tông learned that many people at court were unconvinced by the decision. The emperor therefore ordered an autograph edict to be written and entrusted Thái bảo Nguyễn Lỗi with publicly announcing to the court officials the accusations against Lê Lăng and Lê Nhân Thuận, including what were described as their acts of “arrogance and extravagance.” However, historical sources state that the officials still believed the case to be unjust, though no one dared to say so openly.
Death and Legacy
Lê Lăng was executed in the third year of the Quang Thuận era (1462) after being accused of plotting rebellion. His property was also confiscated. The case took place within the particularly sensitive political context of the early years of Lê Thánh Tông’s reign, when the newly enthroned emperor had to deal with the meritorious officials who had directly participated in deposing Lê Nghi Dân and placing him on the throne.
What is particularly noteworthy is that the official historical record preserves both Lê Thánh Tông’s suspicions toward Lê Lăng and the reaction of court officials after his execution. The emperor had to order the public announcement of Lê Lăng’s alleged offenses in order to explain the decision, while the historical record also states that “everyone still considered it an injustice, but no one dared to speak out.”
Therefore, in assessing Lê Lăng’s death, it is necessary to distinguish between the accusations made by the court and the historical record’s account of contemporary reactions, rather than automatically treating those accusations as facts that had been conclusively proven.
Lê Lăng’s lineage nevertheless continued in later generations. A distant descendant, Lê Diễn, received hereditary privilege and awaited review for appointment to office. This detail shows that although Lê Lăng had been convicted and his property confiscated, his descendants were later still recognized by the court and permitted to benefit from the hereditary privileges granted to the descendants of meritorious officials.

Lê Lăng
