Truong Han Sieu (?–1354)
Background
Truong Han Sieu was a native of Thang Phu village, Yen Ninh district, Truong Yen circuit (now Van Giang ward, Hoa Lu city, Ninh Binh province).
According to the official histories, Truong Han Sieu began his career as a retainer of Tran Hung Dao. He was known for his resolute character and profound learning. Brief biographies by Vietnamese authors note that Truong Han Sieu “rendered many meritorious services in the two wars against the Yuan invaders.” The Dictionary of Literature records that he “made certain contributions in the second and third wars of resistance against the Yuan.”
Thus, Truong Han Sieu took part in the second and third Mongol–Yuan invasions while still young, and together with Nguyen Trung Ngan, he was among the Tran officials who lived beyond the age of eighty.
Political career
Truong Han Sieu was an outstanding statesman, poet, and historian of the Tran dynasty, renowned for his deep learning, upright character, and firm orthodox思想. His scholarly and moral prestige was so great that the Tran kings always addressed him as “Teacher,” never calling him by his personal name—an extremely rare practice in the history of monarchies. His official career spanned four Tran reigns, leaving a deep imprint on politics, the military, and cultural–intellectual life.
In 1308, under King Tran Anh Tong, Truong Han Sieu was appointed Han lam hoc si, a post reserved for highly learned scholars who directly drafted court documents and discussed state affairs, showing that he was early regarded as a leading intellectual of the court.
In 1314, under King Tran Minh Tong, he was promoted to the post of Hanh khien, an important position within the central administration, directly involved in handling major state matters. His repeated appointment to key offices reflected the court’s exceptional trust in his talent and character.
In 1339, during the reign of King Tran Hien Tong, he was appointed Huu ty lang trung. In 1342, under King Tran Du Tong, Truong Han Sieu was promoted to Ta ty lang trung and concurrently appointed Kinh luoc su to govern Lang Giang, a region of major military and administrative importance. In 1345, he was further promoted to Ta gian nghi dai phu, with responsibility for remonstrating with the king and frankly discussing state affairs, thereby helping to uphold court discipline.
In 1351, Truong Han Sieu was elevated to Tham tri chinh su, a position roughly equivalent to the later Shangshu, making him one of the highest-ranking ministers of the Tran court. Two years later, in the Quy Ty year (1353), he was entrusted with command of the Than Sach troops and sent to take up post in Hoa Chau (the area of present-day Hue). During his tenure there, he stabilized local conditions and safeguarded frontier security, clearly demonstrating his capabilities not only in civil administration but also in military affairs.
In the eleventh month of the following year, due to advanced age and declining health, Truong Han Sieu submitted a memorial requesting leave on grounds of illness. However, before he could return to the capital, he passed away. In recognition of this great loss, the court posthumously conferred upon him the rank of Thai bao, honoring the lifelong dedication of a senior statesman.
In 1363, the retired emperor Tran Nghe Tong further posthumously promoted Truong Han Sieu to Thai pho. Notably, from 1372 onward, he was enshrined at the National Temple of Literature, alongside sages of earlier ages—an exceptionally rare honor reserved only for exemplary figures of learning and moral integrity.
In Dai Viet su ky toan thu, the historian Phan Phu Tien commented on the Tran court’s decision to enshrine Truong Han Sieu together with Chu Van An at the Temple of Literature as follows: “Only those eminent Confucian scholars of successive ages who were able to eradicate heterodox beliefs and preserve the orthodox tradition were allowed to be worshiped at the Temple of Literature, thereby manifesting the proper lineage of learning. Nghe Tong permitted Chu An and Truong Han Sieu to be included: Han Sieu was firm and resolute, opposing Buddhism; An cultivated personal purity, steadfastly upheld integrity, and did not seek high office.”
This assessment not only affirms Truong Han Sieu’s scholarly position in the intellectual history of Dai Viet, but also shows him as a representative figure of orthodox Confucian scholars of the Tran period: firm in stance, strict toward heterodoxy, and steadfast in upholding moral principles and social order.
Literary legacy
Truong Han Sieu was a man of broad learning and deep patriotism, revered by the Tran kings as a teacher. According to Dai Viet Su Ky, he was firm and outspoken in opposing Buddhism. Seven of his poems survive today, including Cuc hoa bach vinh (of which four poems on chrysanthemums remain), Hoa Chau tac (Poems composed in Hoa Chau), Duc Thuy son (Duc Thuy Mountain), and Qua Tong do (Passing the Song capital).
In prose, he left two works: Khai Nghiem tu bi ky (Stele inscription of Khai Nghiem Pagoda) and Duc Thuy son linh te thap ky (Record of the Ling Te Pagoda at Duc Thuy Mountain), both written in Classical Chinese. Two other works, Hoang trieu dai dien and Hinh thu, co-compiled with Nguyen Trung Ngan, as well as the memorial Ta tru Han lam vien truc hoc si cited in Dai Viet su ky toan thu and Kien van tieu luc, have been lost and not yet rediscovered.
Truong Han Sieu also composed Linh te thap ky and Quang Nghiem tu bi van, both of which exalt Confucian learning and criticize Buddhism. Together with Nguyen Trung Ngan, he co-compiled Hoang trieu dai dien and Hinh thu, laying the foundations for the operation of the Vietnamese feudal state under a legal framework. He was also a cultural figure with one of the earliest visions of tourism in Vietnam.
Worship and commemoration
A temple dedicated to Truong Han Sieu stands at the foot of Non Nuoc Mountain in the Duc Thuy Son Park along the Day River in Ninh Binh city. The temple is built in the “dinh”-shaped architectural style, consisting of three bays of the main hall and two bays of the rear sanctuary, with a double-tiered tiled roof and upward-curving corners. Seen from the side, the roof edges curl upward like the image of a dragon boat. At the ridge are two dragons flanking a moon motif. The temple’s facade bears a large Chinese-character inscription reading Truong Thang Phu Tu. Inside the main hall are a ceremonial screen, an incense altar, and stands holding ritual objects. In the innermost bay of the rear sanctuary stands an incense altar and a bronze statue of Truong Han Sieu.
Near the temple is the historical and cultural site of Non Nuoc Pagoda, located across Non Nuoc Mountain. Together they form a cultural and spiritual complex in the heart of Ninh Binh city.
In the past, Phuc Am village also worshiped him at Dau Long Pagoda, Tan Thanh ward, Hoa Lu city, Ninh Binh. His statue is also enshrined at the Vu Lam royal retreat within the Trang An World Heritage complex. A memorial complex dedicated to the cultural luminary Truong Han Sieu has been built within the precincts of the Truong clan ancestral temple of Vietnam in Ninh My ward, Hoa Lu city, Ninh Binh province.
In Hai Duong province, Tu Xa Temple in Tu Xa hamlet, Doan Ket commune, Thanh Mien district, worships Truong Han Sieu. Based on its architecture, the temple dates back to the Le Restoration period and was restored in 1907. Built in the “dinh” style, it includes a five-bay forehall and a three-bay rear sanctuary. The site preserves many architectural details and artifacts from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including a large inscription reading Tran trieu nguyen suy. Each year, two festivals are held: on the 7th day of the 3rd month, commemorating his death anniversary, and on the 12th day of the 8th month, commemorating his birth. The festivals feature various folk games such as net throwing, bamboo bridge walking, and swimming. The site was officially ranked as a historical monument in 2001.
In Ha Nam province, Tu Du Temple, also known as Cao Da Communal House, worships Truong Han Sieu as the founding ancestor of Cao Da village, now in Nhan My commune, Ly Nhan district.
At Co Trach Temple within the Tran Temple complex in Nam Dinh, the left wing houses the spirit tablet of Truong Han Sieu.
The name Truong Han Sieu has been given to many streets in cities across Vietnam, including Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Ninh Binh, Hai Duong, Hue, Nha Trang, Vung Tau, Ba Ria, Buon Ma Thuot, Hai Phong, Hoa Binh, Bac Lieu, Tam Diep, Cao Lanh, Nam Dinh, Long Xuyen, Phan Thiet, Thanh Hoa, Hung Yen, Kon Tum, Dong Ha, Bien Hoa, Rach Gia, Sam Son, Bim Son, and others. Notably, his name is also borne by the road leading to the high school named after him in his homeland—a place that has educated many talented students.

Truong Han Sieu (? – 1354)
Origines
Nghe Tong permit a Chu An et a Truong Han Sieu d’y etre associes.
