Name and Geographic Location

Trieu To Mieu is one of the five most important ancestral temples of the Nguyen Dynasty, located at the southeastern corner inside the Hue Imperial City, and situated to the north of Thai Mieu. It is also the earliest temple structure built within the Imperial Citadel complex, initiated in 1804 during the early period when the Nguyen Dynasty established its capital.

Trieu To Mieu is dedicated to Trieu To Tinh Hoang De—the progenitor of nine generations of Nguyen Lords and subsequent emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty.

Today, the site is located in Phu Xuan Ward, Hue City, within the Complex of Hue Monuments, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site that is preserved and promoted for its historical value.

History and Historical Figures

Construction and Restoration History

Trieu To Mieu was constructed under the reign of Gia Long in the 3rd year of his rule (1804), shortly after the Nguyen Dynasty consolidated power and began establishing a system of ceremonial architecture in the Hue Imperial City. The temple is dedicated to Trieu To Tinh Hoang De and the Empress.

Throughout its existence, Trieu To Mieu has been closely associated with a strictly regulated system of royal court rituals. Annually, five principal ceremonies were held here: Xuan huong (Spring offering), Ha huong (Summer offering), Thu huong (Autumn offering), Dong huong (Winter offering), and the year-end ceremony (Hap huong) in the last month of the lunar year. In addition to these regular rites, the temple also hosted announcement ceremonies during major court events such as coronations, imperial birthdays (Van Tho, Thanh Tho), Lunar New Year, Doan Duong Festival, ceremonies related to the Crown Prince, celebratory rites (Khanh ha), and receptions of envoys.

Nguyen Dynasty historical records document several specific ritual events at the temple:

On the 10th day of the 8th lunar month in the 1st year of Thieu Tri (1841), the emperor dispatched officials to Trieu To Mieu to conduct a ceremonial report marking the elevation of a Royal Noble Consort to Empress.

In the 2nd year of Thieu Tri (1842), before and after the emperor’s northern tour, royal family members were sent to perform reporting and thanksgiving rituals at the temple.

In the 2nd year of Tu Duc (1849), prior to a major ceremony at Thai Hoa Palace, officials were sent to Trieu Mieu to conduct ritual reporting.

Notably, imperial longevity celebrations were closely tied to rituals conducted at this temple. Among the 13 Nguyen emperors, only five lived beyond the age of 40: Gia Long, Minh Mang, Thieu Tri, Tu Duc, and Khai Dinh. Except for Gia Long, the others celebrated the Tu Tuan Dai Khanh (40th birthday jubilee):

Minh Mang in 1830

Thieu Tri in 1846

Tu Duc in 1868

Khai Dinh in 1925

For these 40th birthday celebrations, ritual reporting at Trieu Mieu was conducted with great solemnity. For example:

On May 6, in the 6th year of Thieu Tri (1846), Emperor Thieu Tri personally visited the temple to perform the reporting ceremony prior to the jubilee.

Regarding the Ngu Tuan (50th birthday) celebrations, only two emperors held such ceremonies:

On April 7, in the 21st year of Minh Mang (1840), officials were sent to perform rituals at the temple before the emperor’s 50th birthday celebration.

On July 11, in the 31st year of Tu Duc (1878), Emperor Tu Duc personally conducted the ritual at the temple, demonstrating deep reverence for his ancestors.

Regarding restoration, Nguyen Dynasty archival documents indicate that the structure underwent multiple repairs due to deterioration. Over time, the enclosure walls cracked, the foundations subsided, wooden structural elements (columns and beams) decayed, roofs leaked during the rainy season, and ritual objects deteriorated or became unusable. These damages accumulated over more than two centuries, influenced by Hue’s harsh climate and wartime impacts.

In 1989, due to the severe deterioration of Thai Mieu, Trieu To Mieu became the shared worship site for the nine Nguyen Lords.

On September 5, 2016, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center inaugurated the completed restoration of Trieu To Mieu after 27 months of construction. This restoration was significant in recovering the architectural appearance and preserving the historical and cultural value of this important ritual structure within the Hue Monuments Complex.

Worshipped Figures

Trieu To Mieu is dedicated to Trieu To Tinh Hoang De Nguyen Kim and Tu Tin Chieu Y Hoang Nhan Thuc Tuc Tinh Hoang Hau.

Nguyen Kim (1468–1545), born into a prominent family in Thanh Hoa, was the son of Trung Quoc Cong Nguyen Van Luu and grandson of Pho Quoc Cong Nguyen Nhu Trac. He entered the Later Le court early, holding the position of Huu Ve Dien Tien Tuong Quan and the noble title An Thanh Hau.

After the collapse of the Early Le Dynasty and the usurpation by Mac Dang Dung, around 1529–1530, Nguyen Kim brought his family and followers to Ai Lao, both to evade the Mac regime and to secretly gather forces. There, he recruited talented individuals, built military strength, and prepared for the restoration of the Le Dynasty.

In 1533, Nguyen Kim and former Le loyalists enthroned Le Trang Tong in Ai Lao, officially restoring the legitimacy of the Le Dynasty. From then on, he assumed a leading role, was granted the title Thai Su Hung Quoc Cong, and commanded all anti-Mac forces. Under his leadership, the Le restoration forces gradually strengthened, repeatedly advancing into Thanh Hoa and Nghe An, recruiting supporters and expanding territory, laying the foundation for the prolonged North–South Dynasties conflict lasting over half a century.

In 1545 (Year of the Snake), while the restoration effort was gaining momentum, Nguyen Kim was poisoned by Duong Chap Nhat, a surrendered Mac general, and died on May 20. His death was a major loss to the Le restoration movement, but the foundations he built continued to be developed.

Nguyen Kim was also the father of Tien Chua Nguyen Hoang, who later governed Thuan Hoa, marking the beginning of the Nguyen Lords’ power in the South. From Nguyen Hoang, the Nguyen lineage developed through nine generations of lords, culminating in Gia Long’s unification of the country in 1802 and the establishment of the Nguyen Dynasty. Therefore, upon ascending the throne, Gia Long posthumously honored Nguyen Kim as Trieu To—the founding ancestor of all Nguyen Lords and later emperors.

Moreover, Nguyen Kim was also the maternal ancestor of the Trinh Lords, making his influence span both major political factions of the period. Although he never proclaimed himself emperor or founded a dynasty, he laid the decisive foundation for the political landscape of Dai Viet for over two centuries.

Architectural Landscape

Trieu To Mieu is located north of Thai Mieu. The overall layout is a rectangular enclosed compound with surrounding walls. Notably, the southern side of the compound adjoins the wall of Thai Mieu.

Inside, the main hall serves as the central structure, housing the altar of Trieu To Tinh Hoang De and the Empress. Five major annual rituals are conducted here, similar to those at Thai Mieu, reflecting the temple’s importance within the Nguyen Dynasty’s system of ancestral worship.

In terms of scale and architectural style, Trieu To Mieu shares similarities with Hung Mieu. The complex consists of a main hall in a double-building layout: a rear hall with 3 compartments and 2 wings, and a front hall with 5 compartments and 2 single wings, connected by a “vo cua” structural system, forming the characteristic “trung thiem diep oc” style of Hue royal architecture. The main worship hall covers approximately 540 square meters.

The structure is entirely wooden, with a roof covered in yellow glazed yin-yang tiles. The roof edges use matching decorative tiles, creating the distinctive golden appearance of royal architecture. Roof ridges and decorative borders feature intricate reliefs and ceramic inlays. Most wooden components are lacquered in traditional vermilion, while the rear hall retains natural wood tones. Decorative motifs such as lien ba, bao cot, and “thuong song ha ban” doors are gilded, enhancing the solemn and splendid appearance.

Auxiliary structures flank the main hall: Than Kho to the east (for storing ritual objects) and Than Tru to the west (for preparing offerings), ensuring full support for ceremonial functions.

The surrounding space is carefully organized: the north side borders the citadel wall, while the other three sides are enclosed by low walls approximately 1.2 meters high, each with an प्रवेश gate, maintaining both openness and necessary seclusion for a sacred site. In front lies a courtyard of about 300 square meters paved with Bat Trang bricks. The courtyard and pathways are symmetrically arranged, leading directly to the main hall and forming a solemn ceremonial axis.

Classification

Trieu To Mieu is part of the Complex of Hue Monuments, which was recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site on December 11, 1993.
