Dinh Liet (1400–1471)
Background
Dinh Liet was born in the Canh Thin year (1400) under the reign of Ho Quy Ly. He came from Lam Son, Tho Xuan district (Thanh Hoa). He was the younger brother of the famous general Dinh Le and a nephew of King Le Thai To (Le Loi). According to the genealogy of the Dinh Danh clan (Thai Binh), he was a descendant of Dinh Lien, King of Nam Viet, son of Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang. His childhood name was Hong Mai. From an early age, Dinh Liet was known for his intelligence and military talent, nurturing great ambitions and strong patriotism.
According to Dai Viet thong su by Le Quy Don, when Le Loi was preparing for the uprising, Dinh Liet and his brothers actively responded and were among the 19 participants in the Lung Nhai Oath (February 1416). He was one of the few figures who witnessed both the great victory over the Ming and the early peaceful and prosperous years of the Early Le dynasty. Together with Dinh Le and Dinh Bo, Dinh Liet was one of the outstanding generals who made crucial contributions to the success of the Lam Son Uprising.
Participation in the Lam Son Uprising
At the end of 1424, the Lam Son army began attacking Nghe An through a series of battles, the fiercest of which was the battle of Kha Luu. After capturing Tra Lan chau and preparing to besiege Nghe An citadel, the Lam Son forces were suddenly counterattacked by Ming troops. Le Loi ordered General Dinh Le to lead troops to set up an ambush at the strategically dangerous Kha Luu area. Dinh Liet was tasked with leading over one thousand soldiers to secretly move toward Do Gia (now Huong Son district, Ha Tinh province) and then circle around to attack the enemy from the rear in coordination with Dinh Le. As expected, the Ming troops fell into Dinh Le’s ambush and, before they could react, were fiercely attacked from behind by Dinh Liet’s forces, suffering a crushing defeat.
Afterward, Dinh Liet also distinguished himself by capturing Tung Linh and Linh Cam, liberating Tra Lan and Ngoc Ma, and advising Le Loi to move the main headquarters to the Thien Nhan mountain area. During this period, Empress Bach Ngoc of the Later Tran dynasty was encouraging settlement and land reclamation in the region and hosted a banquet to honor generals who had made major contributions to the anti-Ming resistance. General Dinh Liet was among those invited and honored.
At the end of 1427, news arrived that Lieu Thang, together with many capable Ming generals, was leading a massive relief force of 100,000 troops to support Vuong Thong, who was besieged at Dong Quan. The Lam Son leadership decided to engage the enemy in decisive battles at two key locations: Chi Lang and Xuong Giang. Le Loi dispatched Generals Dinh Liet, Le Sat, Le Van, and Luu Nhan Tru with 10,000 troops to secretly ambush the enemy in the treacherous terrain of Chi Lang (Lang Son). The force commanded by Dinh Liet achieved a major victory in a surprise attack at Ma Yen mountain, where Lieu Thang was killed on the spot. This resounding victory greatly boosted the morale of the Lam Son troops and provided strong momentum for subsequent decisive battles.
Participation in State Affairs
In recognition of these merits, immediately after ascending the throne in 1428 (the first year of Thuan Thien), King Le Thai To rewarded 93 meritorious officials. Among them, Dinh Liet and Dinh Le were appointed Deputy Commanders of the Thiet Dot Guard, ranked at the highest level among the founding meritorious officials who had participated since the Lung Nhai Oath. One year later (1429), when the tablets of meritorious officials were engraved, he was granted the title Dinh Thuong hau. In 1442, he was promoted to the rank of Nhap noi Tu ma and allowed to participate in court affairs.
In May 1434, during the reign of King Le Thai Tong, Champa forces raided the southern frontier. Dinh Liet was ordered to lead troops to repel them. When he had only reached Hoa Chau (modern Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien–Hue), the Champa king Bo De, upon hearing that Dinh Liet was leading the expedition, became frightened and withdrew his forces. At the same time, a local tribal chief named Dao Thanh, attacked by rival tribesmen, sought Dinh Liet’s help. Dinh Liet led troops to assist and successfully defeated the attackers.
In July 1444, following the Le Chi Vien case (1442) during the reign of King Le Nhan Tong, while the king was still young, slander led to Dinh Liet’s downfall. The regent Nguyen Thi Anh ordered the arrest of his entire family while he was serving as Thai pho. Four years later, thanks to pleas from royal relatives such as Le Khac Phuc and Princess Ngoc Lan, he was released, though his family remained imprisoned for nearly two more years before being freed.
In 1454, Dinh Liet was reinstated and granted the rank of Thai Bao. On the night of October 3, 1459, Prince Lang Son Le Nghi Dan launched a palace coup, assassinating King Le Nhan Tong and Queen Tuyen Tu, then proclaimed himself emperor on October 7, plunging the court into chaos. In response, on June 6, 1460, Dinh Liet—then holding the titles Khai phu nghi dong tam ty, Thai pho, binh chuong quan quoc trong su, and bearing the title A quan hau—joined with senior officials such as Nguyen Xi, Le Lang, Le Niem, and others to plot the overthrow of Le Nghi Dan and restore legitimacy to the Le dynasty.
After court, Nguyen Xi and Dinh Liet personally commanded troops to kill Pham Don and Phan Ban, Nghi Dan’s close associates, deposed him, and demoted him to Le Duc hau. The ministers then enthroned Prince Tu Thanh as King Le Thanh Tong, ushering in the most prosperous era of the Early Le dynasty.
In October 1460, King Le Thanh Tong granted Dinh Liet the title Lan Quan cong. In December of the same year, he and Le Lang led troops to suppress a rebellion by the Cam clan chieftain in the border regions, earning further merit and promotion to Thai su phu chinh. After the death of the meritorious official Nguyen Xi in 1465, Dinh Liet became a central pillar of the court, frequently participating in major state decisions and enjoying great respect from the king and officials alike.
In 1470, during the southern campaign against Champa, Dinh Liet served as Chinh lo tuong quan, acting as vanguard alongside Le Niem. They captured the Champa capital Do Ban and took King Tra Toan prisoner, playing a decisive role in the victory. In 1471, Dinh Liet passed away and was posthumously granted the title Trung Muc vuong. He was one of the founding meritorious officials who lived to witness the full prosperity of the Hong Duc era. His descendants continued to serve the state for generations under the Later Le and Le–Trinh regimes.
Family
Luong Minh Nguyet, from Chue Cau village, Nam Dinh province, was renowned for her beauty and skill in ao dao singing. During Le Loi’s resistance against the Ming, she operated a famous tavern near Co Long citadel (Dong Do, now Thang Long) to gather intelligence on the enemy. In one attack on Co Long, she and other attendants intoxicated Ming generals and signaled Lam Son forces under General Le Thach, enabling the successful capture of the citadel.
After Dinh Liet was granted the title Quoc cong and adopted the royal surname Le, she was honored as Nhat pham phu nhan. Later kings bestowed titles upon the couple as Phuc than. According to Professor Tran Gia Phung, Luong Thi Hue may have been another name for Luong Minh Nguyet. She is worshiped at temples in Tho Xuong district and is popularly known as Ngoc Kieu Phu nhan.
Worship and Legacy
Temples dedicated to Dinh Le and Dinh Liet exist throughout Vietnam. Notable sites include the Dinh Le Temple in Van Ha town, Thieu Hoa district, recognized as a National Historical–Cultural Relic in 1994, and the Temple of the Three Quoc cong—Dinh Le, Dinh Bo, and Dinh Liet—in Dong Cao village, Trung Chinh commune, Nong Cong district.
In recognition of their contributions, streets in central Hanoi are named after Dinh Liet and his brother Dinh Le. Dinh Liet Street, located in Hoan Kiem district, is about 175 meters long, connecting Hang Bac and Cau Go. His name is also used for streets in Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Nha Trang, reflecting enduring gratitude for a great meritorious official in Vietnamese history.

Dinh Liet (1400–1471)
Origines

(Dinh Liet,1400–1471)
- 清化省绍化县万河镇丁礼祠,1994年列为国家级历史文化遗迹;
