Background and Life
Lê Chí was a high-ranking military official under the reign of Emperor Lê Thánh Tông, noted for his calm temperament, steadfast character, and exceptional intelligence. He came from a family that had rendered service to the Lê dynasty. His father was Lê Sao, and his grandfather was Lê Thọ Vực, both of whom had made contributions to the court. For this reason, when rewarding Lê Chí and Lê Vĩnh, Lê Thánh Tông on several occasions recalled the achievements of their forebears.
Lê Chí once held the office of Tả đô đốc and accompanied the army in a campaign against Champa. During the battle, he personally charged to the front, routed the enemy forces, and captured the ruler of Champa, Trà Toại. After the army returned, he was granted the title Bình Lương bá in recognition of this achievement.
In the eighteenth year of the Hồng Đức era (1487), Lê Thánh Tông ordered Lê Chí, together with Kinh Dương hầu Lê Quyền and officials from the Five Military Commissions, the Six Ministries, the Censorate, and the Six Courts, to participate in compiling the Minh lệnh, consisting of 145 articles. Lê Chí was subsequently promoted from Bình Lương bá to Bình Lương hầu. The fact that he was entrusted with participating in the compilation of an important body of court regulations shows that he was valued not only for his military achievements but was also trusted in affairs of government.
In the twenty-seventh year of the Hồng Đức era (1496), Lê Thánh Tông returned to Lam Kinh, with Lê Chí and Lê Vĩnh accompanying the imperial procession. Remembering the services rendered by their forebears, Lê Sao and Lê Thọ Vực, the emperor composed and bestowed poems upon them. At the same time, the emperor granted Lê Chí thirty lạng of silver and Lê Vĩnh twenty-five lạng as rewards for their relatives. This detail shows that Lê Thánh Tông’s recognition was directed not only toward Lê Chí himself, but also placed his achievements within the broader tradition of meritorious service associated with his family.
Toward the end of Lê Thánh Tông’s reign, Lê Chí held the office of Thái bảo and stood at the head of the court officials. When Lê Thánh Tông died, he, together with Trịnh Công Đán and Lê Vĩnh, supported Lê Hiến Tông’s accession to the throne. As a result, Lê Chí was elevated to the title Quỳnh quận công. He died not long afterward. At the beginning of the Đoan Khánh era (1505), Lê Chí was posthumously granted the title Hoài quốc công.
Death, Worship, and Family Legacy
After Lê Chí’s death, his lineage continued to flourish and maintain a high position at court. He had five sons, of whom one was granted the rank of công, two were granted the rank of hầu, one was granted the rank of bá, and one became an imperial son-in-law. Historical sources therefore described his family as exceptionally noble and distinguished, “without equal.”
Later generations of Lê Chí’s descendants continued to enter official service and achieve distinction. More distant descendants, such as Nhân Lương hầu Lê Công Thái and Tín quận công Lê Công Từ, served under the reign of Emperor Trang Tông and Thế Tổ Thái vương. They repeatedly rendered meritorious service, both held the office of Thái bảo, and were granted the designation Tuyên Lực công thần.
In later generations, Nghĩa Lộc hầu Lê Công Trừng and Hoằng Lễ hầu Lê Công Giới served under Emperor Thần Tông and Văn Tổ Nghị vương. They regularly accompanied and guarded their lords and participated in military campaigns, and both were granted the designation Dương Vũ Uy Dũng Tán trị công thần.
In the thirteenth year of the Chính Hòa era (1692), during the reign of Emperor Lê Hy Tông, the court ordered the Resident Administrator Nguyễn Thời Vân to rebuild, on the site of the old foundations in the family’s native region, an ancestral hall dedicated to Trung Túc vương Lê Lai. The court also granted ritual lands for ancestral sacrifices in order to honor the achievements of the forebears. The construction of the ancestral hall and the granting of ritual lands show that the family’s tradition of meritorious service continued to be recognized by the court across many generations.
In addition, descendants of the lineage continued to appear in official selection and examination records. Lê Đăng Doanh and Lê Đăng Trụ, belonging to a later generation of descendants, were also recorded in the metropolitan examination and other official selection examinations. An investiture document from the Quang Thuận era granting Lê Niệm the title Đình Chỉ hầu was still preserved, showing that the distinguished status of the lineage was maintained for a relatively long period.
Viewed as a whole, Lê Chí stood out above all for his military achievements, his ability in government affairs, and his position among the senior officials at the end of Lê Thánh Tông’s reign. From a military officer who distinguished himself in the campaign against Champa, he was gradually entrusted with major responsibilities at the central court, participated in compiling the Minh lệnh, held the office of Thái bảo, and became one of the officials who supported Lê Hiến Tông’s accession.
After his death, the family’s tradition of meritorious service continued through many generations, creating a lineage that held a distinctive position in the history of officialdom and aristocracy under the Lê dynasty.

Lê Chí
