Phạm Văn Xảo (? – 1431)

Phạm Văn Xảo (? – 1431)

Background

Phạm Văn Xảo (?–1431) was one of the founding meritorious officials of the Early Lê dynasty and was a native of the Kinh lộ region. Surviving historical sources do not clearly record his year of birth, specific place of origin, or family background; they only state that he came from Kinh lộ and was a man of talent and intelligence. Unlike some Lam Sơn meritorious officials who originated from the Lam Sơn region or belonged to the royal lineage, Phạm Văn Xảo had no blood relationship with Lê Lợi. His position within the uprising was established primarily through his abilities and military contributions.

Phạm Văn Xảo assisted Lê Lợi during the Lam Sơn uprising and was appointed Khu mật đại sứ. Although historical records do not specify the exact year in which he joined the insurgent forces, by 1426, when the Lam Sơn army entered the stage of a general counteroffensive toward the north, he already held an important position among its commanders. Historical sources describe him as “talented and intelligent,” and his subsequent military activities show that he possessed the ability to organize forces, maneuver troops, coordinate military operations, and seize opportunities on the battlefield.

Historical Context

Phạm Văn Xảo matured during the war against the Ming, but the most prominent achievements of his career belonged to the final stage of the Lam Sơn uprising, when the overall military situation had fundamentally changed.

In 1426, after the insurgents had gained control over a vast region stretching from Thanh Hóa to Thuận Hóa, Lê Lợi decided to divide his forces and advance northward along several routes. The objective was not only to expand the territory under Lam Sơn control, but also to gradually isolate Đông Quan, the center of Ming administration in Đại Việt, while preventing relief armies from Yunnan and Guangxi from advancing southward.

Within this strategic framework, Phạm Văn Xảo was assigned, together with other commanders, to advance toward the northwest, both to control routes from Yunnan and to create pressure on Đông Quan. In 1427, when the Ming dynasty dispatched two major relief armies under Liễu Thăng and Mộc Thạnh to relieve Đông Quan, Phạm Văn Xảo was again entrusted with the task of holding Lê Hoa Pass and blocking the army advancing from Yunnan. These campaigns took place during the decisive phase of the uprising, and the insurgents’ successive victories ultimately forced Vương Thông to negotiate peace and withdraw his troops from Đại Việt.

Career

During the early years of his participation in the Lam Sơn uprising, Phạm Văn Xảo was appointed by Lê Lợi to the office of Khu mật đại sứ. Although surviving records do not specify which battles he participated in before 1426, once the insurgent army advanced northward, he quickly became one of the commanders entrusted with important missions.

In the autumn of the year Bính Ngọ (1426), while the insurgent forces were besieging Nghệ An Citadel, Lê Lợi ordered Phạm Văn Xảo, together with Lê Triện and Lê Khả, to lead troops through the administrative regions of Quảng Oai, Quốc Oai, Thiên Quan, Gia Hưng, Quy Hóa, Đà Giang, Tam Đái, and Thao Giang in order to block Ming reinforcements advancing from Yunnan. Phạm Văn Xảo and Lê Triện divided their forces and advanced to the west of Ninh Giang, creating pressure on Đông Quan. At the same time, Phạm Văn Xảo and Lê Khả occupied the Tam Giang area and moved back and forth to support one another, thereby creating an interconnected defensive and offensive position.

The Ming army from Yunnan, commanded by Regional Military Commissioner Vương An Lão, led more than 10,000 troops to Xa Lộc Bridge in Tam Giang. Phạm Văn Xảo and Lê Khả organized an interception and routed this force, killing more than 1,000 Ming soldiers and forcing the remainder to retreat into Tam Giang Citadel. This victory helped block an important route of Ming reinforcement and created favorable conditions for the insurgents to tighten their encirclement of Đông Quan.

While Phạm Văn Xảo and Lê Khả were fighting the reinforcements from Yunnan, the commanders Lê Triện, Lê Lễ, and Lê Xí also defeated Vương Thông’s army at Tốt Động. Lê Lợi then advanced northward from Nghệ An and organized the siege of Đông Quan. Phạm Văn Xảo’s contribution in intercepting the relief forces was recognized and rewarded by the king.

In the year Đinh Mùi (1427), the situation became even more intense when the Ming dynasty dispatched two large relief armies into Đại Việt. The main army under Liễu Thăng advanced from Guangxi, while the second army under Mộc Thạnh entered from Yunnan. Lê Lợi ordered Phạm Văn Xảo and Trịnh Khả to lead troops to hold Lê Hoa Pass in Tuyên Quang, a strategically important position on the route from Yunnan into Đại Việt.

Mộc Thạnh advanced toward the pass, but Phạm Văn Xảo and Trịnh Khả deliberately maintained a defensive position and did not rush into battle. Meanwhile, Liễu Thăng’s army entered through Lạng Sơn and was quickly defeated by the Lam Sơn forces; Liễu Thăng himself was killed in battle. Lê Lợi ordered captured spoils and Liễu Thăng’s official documents to be shown to Mộc Thạnh’s army. Upon learning that the main relief army had been defeated, Mộc Thạnh became alarmed and began to retreat.

Seizing the opportunity, Phạm Văn Xảo and Trịnh Khả immediately shifted from defense to pursuit. The Lam Sơn forces attacked the Ming army at Lãnh Câu and Đan Xá, killing more than 10,000 soldiers, capturing more than 1,000 men and horses, and seizing a large quantity of military supplies and weapons. Mộc Thạnh escaped only with a single horse and without his army. With both major Ming relief armies defeated, Vương Thông at Đông Quan lost his remaining support and was ultimately forced to seek peace and withdraw his forces from the country. The war that had lasted for many years thus came to an end.

Phạm Văn Xảo’s military achievements show that he was not merely a commander who fought directly on the battlefield, but also one capable of organizing strategic positions and waiting for the appropriate moment to act. In his confrontation with Mộc Thạnh, his decision not to engage prematurely while the balance of forces remained unfavorable, followed by his immediate transition to pursuit after Liễu Thăng’s defeat, clearly demonstrates his ability to assess and seize battlefield opportunities.

After the victory of the Lam Sơn uprising, Phạm Văn Xảo became one of the meritorious officials held in particularly high regard by the court.

Family

Surviving historical sources do not provide clear information about Phạm Văn Xảo’s parents, wife, children, or lineage before he joined the Lam Sơn uprising. However, the policy concerning his property and descendants after his execution is recorded relatively clearly.

After Phạm Văn Xảo was executed, the king ordered his landed property to be confiscated. In the first year of the Diên Ninh era (1454), under the reign of Lê Nhân Tông, the court issued a general amnesty and restored the property to Phạm Văn Xảo’s descendants. This indicates that his family had directly suffered the consequences of the judgment against him for many years.

In the fifteenth year of the Hồng Đức era (1484), Lê Thánh Tông posthumously granted Phạm Văn Xảo the office of Thái bảo and the title Thắng quận công, thereby restoring and elevating his status within the Lê dynasty’s system of commemoration for meritorious officials.

Final Years and Worship

After achieving major victories in the resistance against the Ming, Phạm Văn Xảo enjoyed a high position at court. In the third lunar month of the first year of the Thuận Thiên era (1428), after Lê Lợi ascended the throne, the court assessed and rewarded the merits of its officials. Phạm Văn Xảo was promoted to Thái bảo and was granted the royal surname Lê.

In the fifth lunar month of the year Kỷ Dậu (1429), when the court ordered plaques to be engraved with the names of meritorious officials, Phạm Văn Xảo was granted the title Huyện Thượng hầu. His name ranked third on the list of meritorious officials, and he was later promoted to Thái phó. He thus became one of the highest-ranking senior officials and was highly respected by his contemporaries.

Not long afterward, Phạm Văn Xảo was accused of plotting rebellion. Lê Thái Tổ ordered his execution and the confiscation of his landed property. This was one of the cases that generated considerable debate in the history of the early Lê dynasty. The Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư does not record the event of Phạm Văn Xảo’s execution. More detailed accounts are found primarily in Lê Quý Đôn’s Đại Việt thông sử and the Nguyễn-dynasty Khâm định Việt sử Thông giám cương mục.

According to the Đại Việt thông sử, when Lê Thái Tổ grew old and his health declined, his eldest son Lê Tư Tề showed signs of instability, while Lê Nguyên Long was still young. Phạm Văn Xảo and Trần Nguyên Hãn were both founding meritorious officials of great achievement and were highly respected by their contemporaries. Lê Quý Đôn believed that Lê Thái Tổ feared that, after his death, if a young ruler ascended the throne, powerful meritorious officials such as these might develop other intentions. Outwardly, the king continued to treat them with honor, but inwardly he became suspicious. A number of officials, including Lê Quốc Khí, Trình Hoàng Bá, Đinh Bang Bản, Nguyễn Tông Chí, and Lê Đức Dư, took advantage of this situation and submitted secret memorials urging the king to eliminate those under suspicion before it was too late.

However, this was Lê Quý Đôn’s interpretation of the causes of the case, not a confession or direct evidence from Phạm Văn Xảo himself. Notably, the Đại Việt thông sử also records that Lê Thái Tổ later realized that the accusers were deceitful men and regretted what had happened, feeling sympathy for the two men who had suffered injustice. The king further ordered that those accusers were no longer permitted to denounce others and were not to be employed again.

Other sources offer different explanations. Some later accounts suggest that Phạm Văn Xảo was connected with Đèo Cát Hãn, whereas the Khâm định Việt sử Thông giám cương mục records the execution of Phạm Văn Xảo and the rebellion of Đèo Cát Hãn as two separate events. Another hypothesis proposed by later researchers places Phạm Văn Xảo’s death within the context of a succession dispute, suggesting that he and Trần Nguyên Hãn may have supported Lê Tư Tề, while some other meritorious officials supported Lê Nguyên Long. However, this hypothesis is not directly confirmed by the official histories.

Assessment

Phạm Văn Xảo was a distinctive case among the founding meritorious officials of the Early Lê dynasty. Viewed across the entire course of the Lam Sơn uprising, his most significant contributions were concentrated in the period from 1426 to 1427, when the war entered its decisive stage. He directly participated in intercepting reinforcements from Yunnan, contributed to placing pressure on Đông Quan, and later blocked Mộc Thạnh’s army at Lê Hoa Pass before pursuing it once the opposing forces began to collapse.

The most notable feature of Phạm Văn Xảo’s military methods was his ability to combine defense, maneuver, and the timely exploitation of opportunities. When the enemy remained strong, he deliberately held strategically advantageous positions; when the Ming lost the initiative, he immediately shifted to pursuit. His victory over Vương An Lão in 1426 and the pursuit of Mộc Thạnh in 1427 provide the clearest examples of his role in blocking the relief armies, a mission of particular importance to the final victory of the Lam Sơn cause. For this reason, the sources record not only his courage but also emphasize his quality of being “talented and intelligent.”

His contributions were recognized by the court immediately after the war ended. Phạm Văn Xảo was appointed Thái bảo, granted the royal surname, conferred the title Huyện Thượng hầu, ranked third on the list of meritorious officials, and promoted to Thái phó. These titles demonstrate that he once held a very high position at court during the early years of the Lê dynasty.

However, this very career also placed him in a particularly sensitive position within the politics of the early dynasty. A founding meritorious official of great achievement, highly respected by his contemporaries and holding high office, could become an object of suspicion when the court faced questions of succession and the transfer of power. His life, from a highly honored meritorious official to a man executed by the court and later posthumously rehabilitated and honored, clearly reflects the political upheavals of the early Early Lê dynasty.

丙午年(1426)秋,当义军正在围攻 Nghệ An 城时,Lê Lợi 命 Phạm Văn Xảo 与 Lê Triện、Lê Khả 率军巡行 Quảng Oai、Quốc Oai、Thiên Quan、Gia Hưng、Quy Hóa、Đà Giang、Tam Đái 和 Thao Giang 等路,目的是阻止明军由 Vân Nam 方向派来的援军。

由 Đô ty Vương An Lão 指挥的 Vân Nam 明军,率一万余人进抵 Tam Giang 的 Xa Lộc 桥。

Phạm Văn Xảo

Mộc Thạnh

Phạm Văn Xảo

Phạm Văn Xảo

Phạm Văn Xảo
